action

A married couple lives in poor conditions in a simple hut in the forest. The man tries to feed the family as best he can by selling firewood . But the income is nowhere near enough to feed all five children and his wife. He suffers from seeing his children this way and is thinking of killing himself . In particular, the youngest and smallest of the five brothers, whom they call Tom Thumb, suffers from hunger.

One day on his forays through the forest, his father finds a rabbit that is sitting in the forest with a broken paw and can no longer escape. He takes it home and wants to slaughter it there immediately . But his wife urges him to be patient and so they feed the rabbit, because the next Sunday the eldest son celebrates his birthday. On this day everyone is looking forward to the feast - except for Thumbnail. However, the father realizes that things cannot go on like this and decides to take the children to the forest the following day and leave them there. He hopes that wealthy parents will take them in. Thumbnail overhears the conversation and gets hold of white pebbles in a river bed that night . The next day, the parents lead the children into the forest. The father had previously explained to the children that there were mythical creatures there that could satisfy the family's hunger. Tom Thumb marks the way to the parents' house unnoticed. When the father and mother abandon the children, they are initially completely shocked. But Tom Thumb leads her home with the help of the stones. The parents are incredulous that the children are back, but they do not show anything. You decide to lead them back into the woods the next day. Until then, they celebrate the supposedly lost children with bread that they stole that day in the city. Thumbling is secretly pocketing a piece.

When the parents lead her into the forest again, he marks the path with the bread. But ravens eat the pieces. When their parents abandon them again, they get lost in the forest. You wander through the landscape and come to a large house. There a woman opens the door for them and reluctantly lets the five in at first. She worries that her husband will come home and eat the children. Nevertheless, she bought each of them a cup of milk. Suddenly her husband, an ogre comes home and the wife hides the children in the pantry. At dinner with his five daughters, the ogre smells the fresh human flesh and discovers them. He wants to kill her immediately, but his wife urges him to be patient. It's his youngest daughter's birthday tomorrow, Sunday, and until then she can still gain a little weight. After a dinner together, at which the brothers barely get a bite, the children sleep together in one room. The five daughters, each with a crown, lie in one large bed, the five brothers with their sleepyheads in the other bed. When the daughters fell asleep, Tom Thumb got up and exchanged the hats for the crowns. In view of the upcoming feast, the ogre is already dreaming of a multi-course meal with human flesh. He can't wait any longer and goes into the children's bedroom. There he feels the sleepyheads and mistakenly kills his children. He leaves the room and the children can escape.

The following day, his wife discovers the accident. The ogre puts on his seven-league boots and goes in pursuit. In doing so, he turns into a giant, can catch up with the children and eat them. Shortly afterwards he gets tired and lies down to sleep. The children find themselves in a huge stomach , along with game and birds that the ogre also ate. Tom Thumb succeeds in cutting open the ogre's skin with a rabbit's bone, and everyone is set free. The ogre, on the other hand, dies from its injury, not without first enjoying its own blood. Tom Thumb returns to his house and finds the ogre's wife there. She killed herself next to her daughters. In the pantry, Tom Thumb discovered a bulging treasure chest. In the final scene he is seen sitting on a throne, well dressed, while he feeds pieces of meat to his family. On the other hand, he bites an apple and cries.

criticism

The TV movie is the film "too crude" because the film was "brittle, disgusting and unimaginative adaptation [...] who do not own dark magic" one unfolding. Katharina Raab from teleschau - the media service gives a more positive verdict. For them, the happy ending is “takes getting used to, but is still brilliant”. Thumbling as a vegetarian and meat-eaters has an advantage, the others "quickly lose out in the film".
