Francis Lee (Director)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Francis Lee (* in Soyland , Calderdale , West Yorkshire ) is an English film actor , film director and screenwriter .

Life

Francis Lee was born in Soyland, West Yorkshire, where his family ran a farm. After attending secondary school at Ryburn Valley High School in Sowerby Bridge and at Wakefield District College, he studied at Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama and subsequently worked in the theater sector. Lee made his debut as a film actor in 1994 on an episode of the television series Peak Practice . In 1999 he took over his first film role in Topsy-Turvy - Upside Down by Mike Leigh , but most of his film and television roles were small in nature.

At the age of 40, after losing increasing interest in acting and wanting to tell his own stories, he began directing. In order to earn the money for the film work, he worked for some time on a garbage dump. For his short film The Farmer's Wife , Lee received the Yorkshire Film Award (Best Yorkshire Film) at the 2012 Leeds International Film Festival . After this and a few other short films, Lee directed a feature film for God's Own Country for the first time. Lee also wrote the screenplay for the film and presented it at the Sundance Film Festival 2017 , where he received the Directing Award in the World Cinema, and in February 2017 in the Panorama section at the 67th Berlinale . Lee shot this film in and around Keighley in West Yorkshire , close to his birthplace Soyland, where he grew up on a farm.

In September 2020 Lee will present his film entitled Ammonite at the Toronto International Film Festival , starring Saoirse Ronan , Kate Winslet and Fiona Shaw , among others .
