My best friend (Original title: Me Without You ) is a British - German film drama from 2001 . Directed by Sandra Goldbacher , who wrote the script together with Laurence Coriat .
action
The action begins in 1973 in London . The girls who are friends, Holly and Marina, spend their time together during the summer holidays. Holly's Jewish parents are considered conservative, and Marina's parents are separated.
In 1978, Marina experimented with drug use at a party. Holly sleeps with Nat, her friend's older brother, and loses her virginity in the process. The event temporarily divided the girlfriends. In 1982 they are both studying at college and fall in love with Professor Daniel, with whom they both enter into a relationship.
Nat and his girlfriend move to France. Holly and Marina make up, but they no longer have fun together. Holly says they spent a long time fighting each other.
Reviews
James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film offers a "sharp-eyed account" of friendship between women that is more complex and honest than in any Hollywood film. Sandra Goldbacher avoids traps and clichés. The script shows both the good and the bad in both women. The representations are strong; the Briton Friel and the American Williams would work "perfectly" together.
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on August 16, 2002 that the film offers "refreshing truth" that is a change from the "falseness" of films such as The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisters . The game by Michelle Williams, who speaks with a "perfect" British accent, is a positive surprise. The film is not completely free from clichés, but the script is based on the observation of life, not the other films.
The lexicon of international films wrote: "The film portrays the ups and downs, the light and dark sides of long-term friendship with women and at the same time creates a loving panorama of time that brings the pop culture of the last few decades to life."
