Calderdale is a metropolitan borough in metropolitan county West Yorkshire in England named after the River Calder . The administrative seat is the city of Halifax . Other significant places in the district are Brighouse , Elland , Hebden Bridge , Heptonstall , Mytholmroyd , Queensbury , Ripponden , Sowerby Bridge and Todmorden . There is a city partnership with Aachen in Germany and Blatná in the Czech Republic.

The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The county borough Halifax, the boroughs Brighouse and Todmorden, the urban districts Elland, Hebden Royd, Ripponden and Sowerby Bridge and part of the urban district Queensbury and Shelf were merged. These local authorities were previously part of the West Riding of Yorkshire county .

In 1986, Calderdale became a de facto Unitary Authority when the central government dissolved the county’s superordinate administration. Calderdale remained part of West Yorkshire for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police , fire services and public transport.
