Derek Cianfrance (* 1974 in Lakewood ) is an American film director and screenwriter . He gained notoriety primarily through his films Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines .

Life

Derek Cianfrance grew up in Lakewood, Colorado , the second of three children and began making films at the age of 13. He later began studying under the film legends Stan Bakhage and Phil Salomon at the University of Colorado . At the age of 23, the film Brother Tied was self-directed and premiered in Germany in 1998 at the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival . There he won the Ecumenical Jury Prize . Furthermore, it was Brother Tied praised many times and won six other international awards.

In 2010 he directed Blue Valentine with Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling in the lead roles. This film was also recognized and Derek Cianfrance received a Sundance Festival nomination for the Grand Jury Prize. His film The Place Beyond the Pines was released in 2013 . In 2016 he filmed the historical novel of the same name by the author ML Stedman with The Light Between Oceans, starring Alicia Vikander , Michael Fassbender and Rachel Weisz .

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

Derek Cianfrance has been married to director Shannon Plumb since 2005 and is the father of two sons.
