I'll buy 'I prefer a Tyrolean hat is a German pop of Jazz - Trumpeter and crooner Billy Mo (1923-2004) from 1962. Music and lyrics come from Charly Niessen and Franz Rüger .

The number one hit in 1963 meant the breakthrough for Billy Mo, who had a doctorate in jazz trumpet from Trinidad and had already achieved initial successes in post-war Germany with hits like “Das Fräulein Gerda” or “Mein Paragei eats no hard eggs” Entertainers. From then on, a Tyrolean hat became the artist's trademark, which he wore not only for this piece.

piece

The 2:30 minute piece has a polka base with a typical bass line played by a tuba . A rhythm banjo , clarinet , trombone and trumpet can be heard as instruments of Dixieland jazz. Especially in the instrumental passages after the chorus , short, jazz-like collective improvisations are incorporated.

I'd rather buy a Tyrolean hat has three stanzas that tell of full-bodied promises made by a music agent, a rich woman and a corporal in the military, promising Billy Mo fame, prosperity and a military career. After the hoped-for music career in Las Vegas does not materialize (“it was all not true”), Mo refrains from further risks, prefers to buy a Tyrolean hat and makes brass music every Sunday , “always the same piece”.

In some lines of each stanza articles are deliberately left out ("He says:" You are going to be a big star "", "Rich woman in San Remo, made a big show with me", "Corporal said to me"). Obviously, this is supposed to serve a cliché aimed at the origin of the dark-skinned interpreter and the associated lack of German language skills. The refrain, however, does not contain any omissions from articles.

backgrounds

Allegedly the idea for “I'd rather buy a Tyrolean hat” came about after a performance in Gürzenich in Cologne , when the organizer did not show up to pay the fee . When Billy Mo saw a Tyrolean hat on a table , he is said to have said "I'd rather steal a Tyrolean hat", which was told to the lyricist and composer Charly Niessen . Who wrote him the title to the body, which on 1 February 1963 in the German single came and -Verkaufshitparade 12 weeks in the top 10, of which four weeks at number one standing.

Movie

In 1965 the hit film I prefer to buy a Tyrolean hat came into the cinemas, which, in addition to Billy Mo, featured Christiane Rücker , Hannelore Auer , Hubert von Meyerinck and Manfred Schnelldorfer , among others .
