I Know This Much Is True is an American miniseries broadcast by HBO based on the1998novel of the same name by Wally Lamb . Mark Ruffalo plays the dual role of twin brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey. Derek Cianfrance is the scriptwriter and director of the series. The first four of six episodes began broadcasting in May 2020. In German-speaking countries it was shown on TV on Sky Atlantic HD and can also be accessed via Sky Ticket via video-on-demand .

production
Series production was decided in October 2018. The shooting with Ruffulo began in March 2019. In April 2019 began the rotation with Melissa Leo , Rosie O'Donnell , Archie Panjabi , Imogen Poots , Juliette Lewis and Kathryn Hahn . On May 9, 2019, a fire broke out on the set of the series. One building, the film equipment and 20 classic cars were destroyed. There were no injuries, but filming was suspended. The film was shot in the Hudson Valley , among others .

According to Der Spiegel , the series is "a ray of hope in the new mediocrity of streaming abundance":

Art is allowed to hurt, and "I Know This Much Is True" doesn't waste time digging into a few open wounds. ... The family, next to the dishwasher millionaire saga, the crown jewel of the American dream, is a haven of trauma here. ... With "I Know This Much Is True", Cianfrance takes all the liberties that the format offers. The weathered look is reminiscent of US independent films, the dramaturgy develops a melancholy stream of consciousness that repeatedly contracts into highly emotional sequences. This is how Cianfrance shapes the story into a great American tragedy that never slips into soap. "
