The film was released in German cinemas on September 8, 2016.

action

The little headland in the picture below is Cape Campbell near Seddon , where the film was set. In the large view you can see the lighthouse.

Tom Sherbourne, who was a soldier for almost four years in the First World War , becomes a lighthouse keeper on the remote Australian island of Janus Rock after the end of the war . The physically intact but psychologically traumatized Tom meets Isabel, the daughter of the headmaster of the place on the mainland responsible for the lighthouse. He falls in love with her, and together they move to the island after the wedding. Her happiness is marred only by the fact that Isabel becomes pregnant but miscarries on a stormy night. A second child is also born dead. A short time later, a rowing boat with a dead man and a baby washes ashore. Isabel is overjoyed to be able to take care of the foundling . Tom wants to report the find according to the regulations, but his wife persuades him to pass the child off as her own and let it grow up with her. They call it Lucy. They bury the man's body on the island.

When they want to baptize the child on the mainland, Tom notices a grieving woman in the cemetery. The gravestone inscription suggests that it must be Lucy's birth mother. Tormented by feelings of guilt, he writes her an anonymous letter: Your child is alive, her husband is "with God". The woman named Hannah Roennfeldt takes the letter to the police and demands that her child be found. The officials cannot achieve anything at first. Three years later, Isabel meets Lucy's mother at a party on land. She continues to insist on being silent towards her husband, but he can no longer live with his guilty conscience. When he secretly sends a silver baby rattle from the boat to Hannah and she takes her to the police, the rattle is recognized. The police arrest Tom, who takes all the blame.

On the island, the man's body is exhumed from the rowboat . It is Lucy's biological father, the German Frank Roennfeldt. Because of his origins, he was “harassed” by locals, whereupon he fled to the sea with the baby. Tom is now even under suspicion of murder. The officers take the child away from Isabel and give it to the birth mother. Isabel's love for Tom turns into hate. She puts a letter he wrote to her from prison in a drawer without reading it. Lucy, who is now called by her real name Grace, does not want to stay with the completely unknown woman. She runs away and is only found again after a nightly search at the sea.

Hannah visits Tom in prison and has him confirm that he is the only one responsible for the child abduction. Hannah recognizes Lucy's strong bond with Isabel and offers to give her the child back if she charges Tom with her testimony in court, who would then be convicted of the murder of Frank Roennfeldt. Isabel struggles and then remembers Tom's letter in the drawer. After reading it, she realizes how wrong she has treated Tom. She runs to the jail to apologize, but the police are about to take Tom by ship to his trial. Isabel runs to the harbor and can just reach the ship as it casts off. She tells the police that she saw Lucy's birth father lying dead in the rowboat and that she got Tom to keep the child. This frees Tom from the murder charge, but both are punished for taking the child illegally. Hannah asks the police superintendent if she can mitigate the punishment for the two of them, which he affirms. Lucy / Grace is getting used to their new surroundings. During a ride with her grandfather on his horse, he suggests that her name should be Lucy-Grace.

Many years later, Isabel dies and Tom is left alone. One day he gets a visitor; a young woman introduces herself as Lucy-Grace Rutherford. She brought her baby Christopher with her. Tom is happy about her wish to visit him more often.

Age rating

In the United States, the MPAA rated the film PG-13 for its subject matter and some sexual content. In Germany, where the film is rated FSK 12, the release certificate says: “Atmospherically dense and emotionally intense, the film tells of guilt and forgiveness and makes the internal conflicts of its characters easy to understand. Although individual dramatic moments can overtax children under the age of 12 due to their intensity, 12-year-olds are already able to process them because these scenes are well embedded in the context and the film offers enough opportunity for reflection. "

Reviews

The film was able to convince 61 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes (out of 223 critics in total, as of August 19, 2019).

David Kleingers from Spiegel Online says that although the film is in a genre that has produced a number of manipulative, involuntarily funny or simply greasy films in the past , Derek Cianfrance has succeeded in creating an accomplished melodrama without any embarrassment, without touching the heart to offend the mind. The film, according to Kleingers, is convincing as a canvas-filling epic of love and suffering with emotional truthfulness and without false sentimentality.

Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter considers Adam Arkapaw's camera work to be Oscar-worthy , as does Erin Benach's costume design . Feinberg also sees potential candidates for Best Actor in Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander .
