Cape Campbell ,called Te Karaka in the Māori language , is a cape in Marlborough on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The cape is named after a Scottish Vice Admiral named John Campbell who circumnavigated the world in 1740.
geography
Cape Campbell is 35 km southeast of Blenheim at the eastern end of Clifford Bay . The Cook Strait stretches to the north and northeast and the Pacific Ocean to the east of the Cape . The cape can be reached from New Zealand State Highway 1 via Marfells Beach Road along Lake Grassmere , Cape Campbell Road and then via the coastal road of Lighthouse Road .
The cape has the shape of a triangle that towards the top forms a tip that branches off to the north and is a good kilometer long. In the extension of this tip, a reef over a kilometer long extends into the Cook Strait .
Together with Cape Palliser , about 80 km northeast on the southern tip of the North Island , the two capes form the eastern entrance to Cook Strait .
Cape Campbell Lighthouse
At the top of the cape, on the last hill before the sea, at a height of 47 m, is the Cape Campbell Lighthouse . It was put into operation in 1870 and is considered to be the oldest lighthouse in the country. The lighthouse was automated in 1986 and is still in operation.
Film set
The Cape and the Lighthouse played a role in the 2014 film The Light Between Oceans , which hit theaters in 2016.
