Cape Palliser ,called Matakitakiakupe in the Māori language , is a cape at the southernmost point of the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
Cape Palliser was named after his protégé Hugh Palliser by the British navigator and explorer, Captain James Cook , on his first South Sea voyage (1768–1771) .
geography
Cape Palliser is located in the South Wairarapa District of the Wellington region , on the southern foothills of the Aorangi Range , around 50 km southeast of Wellington . The cape consists of a ridge that extends towards the coastline at the southernmost point of the North Island.
To the west of the cape, between Cape Palliser in the northeast and Cape Campbell in the southwest on the South Island of New Zealand, the Cook Strait extends to the northwest and the Pacific Ocean opens up to the south and east .
The cape can be reached via Cape Palliser Road , a coastal road along Palliser Bay , which branches off east of Lake Onoke from Lake Ferry Road coming from Martinborough to the east.
Cape Palliser Lighthouse
The Cape Palliser Lighthouse , commissioned in 1897, is located on a small 58 m high protrusion of the cape , an 18 m high lighthouse that lets its light shine 48 km into the distance. The tower can be reached via 258 steps from the coastal road.
Putangirua Pinnacles
19 km north of Cape Palliser , on the way to the Cape, are the columnar stone formations known as Putangirua Pinnacles in a side valley, around 2 km from the coast . With an estimated age of 200,000 years, the geological formations are a popular destination for hiking excursions and were among other things the location for some scenes in the trilogy of Peter Jackson's film , The Lord of the Rings .
Flora and fauna
The Cape is home to one of the largest colonies of the New Zealand fur seal on the North Island. They are known in New Zealand under the name fur seal .
