The Palliser Bay is a bay at the southern end of the North Island of New Zealand in the south-east of Wellington .
It extends over 40 km along the Cook Strait from Turakirae Head at the southern end of the Rimutaka Ranges to Cape Palliser , the southernmost point of the North Island. The Ruamahanga River flows into the bay after flowing through Lake Wairarapa and Lake Onoke, which is located directly on the coast of the bay .
There are several significant geological features in the coastal region such as the Pūtangirua Pinnacles , Kupe's Sail, and Whatarangi Bluff .
