Jack Thompson (* 31 August 1940 in Manly , Sydney , as John Hadley Payne ) is an Australian actor .

Life

Jack Thompson was born John Hadley Payne in Manly, a suburb of Sydney in 1940 and attended Sydney Boys High School. He changed his name to Thompson when he was adopted.

For many years Jack was part of a " ménage à trois ", which included his wife Leona King, her sister Bunkie. Thompson's first engagement as an actor was a role in the Soap Opera Motel from 1968. In 1971 he then had the lead role in the spy series Spyforce.

Jack Thompson also became known through his participation in the Australian films Sunday Too Far Away , Breaker Morant and Snowy River . In 1980 he was named Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Cannes Film Festival and is now considered a living legend.

He had his last major role in 2008 in the film Australia as a sympathetic alcoholic who becomes a hero.
