action

The four orphans Maps, Misty, Spark and Spit are best friends and were all born in December. Since there are few adoption options for them, they can spend their Christmas holidays by the sea as a little compensation. Shortly after arriving, they befriend the young couple Fearless and Teresa. Misty, Spark, and Spit quickly approach Teresa, but Maps refuses to speak to her. Instead, he meets up with Lucy, a pretty girl who spends the holidays on the beach with her uncle. She leads him to strange rocks where they meet again and again and spend a lot of time together.

The prospect that Fearless and Teresa might adopt one of the boys creates rivalry between the friends. Although they try not to admit this to themselves, it escalates into a solid fight between Maps and Misty. Maps, who is emotionally battered anyway, almost loses faith in human interaction. Not only that "his" Lucy has quietly and secretly disappeared again and, when he finds her again, is already cheating on him with the next best boy, he also has to discover that Fearless had lied to him and the boys. Obviously overwhelmed with the whole situation, Maps withdraws again. But when one day Misty is driven out into the open sea and threatens to drown, he rushes to him, although he cannot swim himself. However, through Fearless' quick intervention, both can be saved and Maps and Misty reconcile. As expected by everyone, Misty is to be adopted by Fearless and Teresa, but when they announce this good news to him and he sees his 3 friends playing on the beach without him, he can't help but cancel the adoption.

After many years, Misty, Spark and Spit meet again as old men on the beach where they had spent their holidays. Maps, who had become a priest in Africa and has since passed away, asked Misty to throw his ashes into the sea here, which the three of them do together.

reception

criticism

“In brightly colored, great panorama pictures, 'December Boys' tells a soulful, magical story about friendship, envy and the desire for love. The central conflict of the orphans, which is determined by the longing for a real family, is portrayed in a particularly sensitive way. In particular, 'Harry Potter' actor Daniel Radcliffe proves that he has a talent for character roles - even if it is unusual to see him with hairy legs or a cigarette in hand. "

Awards

Screenwriter Marc Rosenberg received an Awgie Award from the Australian Writers' Guild in 2007 . Director Rod Hardy received the CGS Award at the 2008 Giffoni Film Festival .

Gross profit

With an estimated budget of $ 4 million, the film grossed only about $ 1.2 million worldwide.
