Freirina pig factory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Freirina pig factory in the Atacama region in Chile is a breeding facility and slaughterhouse for the intensive production of pig carcasses for human consumption, operated by the Chilean food company Agrosuper . With a planned capacity of 2.3 million animals, it is one of the largest of its kind in the world. The plant has provoked resistance from the local population since the start of the project, which escalated in May 2012.

prehistory

In 2007, Agrosuper began building the plant, which went into operation in 2011. In September 2011, in the village of Freirina, inhabited by 5,600 people, the first formal complaint was made about the smell emanating from the facility. Then there were protest marches by the elementary schools, which were no longer able to hold classes. From February 2012 regular open meetings were held under the alliance name Freirina Conciente . As a result, there was a carnival on March 24th . From then on there were more and more meetings in the Plaza de Armas and the first peaceful cacerolazos .

First blockages

On April 21, 2012 the smell was particularly strong and up to eight independent blockades formed from various spontaneous demonstrations, two of which were set up at points that were suitable for preventing road traffic. In the period up to May 17, there were repeated short blocks and talks with the local government failed.

On May 17th, the blockade was set up permanently and fortified with improvised camps. On May 20, units of the Carabineros attacked the camps and arrested nine sleeping people. According to a Peruvian daily newspaper, 32 people were injured in spontaneous demonstrations. A blog reported, citing statements from the population, of the dropping of an unidentified black chemical on the blockades by police helicopters and massive vomiting of people as a result. A communiqué of the citizens spoke of the use of military force, in particular tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets. Two police tanks burned down after attacks by the villagers. Isabel Allende and two other Chilean MPs showed their solidarity with the local population by protesting at the Discurso del 21 de mayo , a traditional address by the President to the nation.

At a meeting in Maitencillos between representatives of the government, the group and people from the movements, a temporary closure of the plant for sanitary reasons was announced by decree. Either because of the blockades or because workers who had fled, the animals had not been cared for for about a week and, according to the company, an acceptable state of health could no longer be restored. The company announced that it would not oppose the decision. The villagers then lifted the blockades and allowed entry for veterinarians. On May 28, CEO José Guzmán announced that the company would not evacuate the 450,000 animals, but would kill and dispose of them.
