Marc Rosenberg (born August 22, 1852 in Kamjanez-Podilskyj , Russian Empire - today Ukraine , † September 4, 1930 in Baden-Baden ) was a Russian-German art historian and collector.

life and work

Marc Rosenberg spent his youth in St. Petersburg and Paris and initially trained as a businessman and banker. He then studied in Bonn and Heidelberg. He received his doctorate in 1877 with the dissertation: The high altar in the Minster in Altbreisach . In 1883 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and was appointed private lecturer for the history of handicrafts, in 1887 he was a. o. Professor and in 1893 honorary professor for decorative painting, applied arts and cabaret. In 1903 he became a Badischer Hofrat and in 1908 a Privy Councilor.

His works are known as hallmarks , they are still used today, especially Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen .

His "hobby horse" was collecting manuscripts, documents, literature, lithographs and pictures with traditional costumes, uniforms, inscriptions as well as historical stone, architectural and natural monuments related to Baden . Important parts of his collection were housed in his country estate, the "Schlössle" on Schmiedsberg in Schapbach . Around half of his collection of manuscripts and books was destroyed in a fire in 1915; the remainder were transferred to the General State Archives in Karlsruhe in 1923 ; other writings from his estate are in the archives of the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection . Rosenberg's jewelry and button collection was auctioned off in 1929.
