action
Nick Carraway is being treated in a sanatorium for his alcohol addiction and depression. He keeps talking about a man named Gatsby. He has difficulty in articulating his thoughts correctly. For this reason, the doctor asks him to write down his thoughts, because the writing should bring him relief. This beginning does not come from the original novel and serves as a framework to introduce the narrator.
The mysterious millionaire and bon vivant Jay Gatsby lives in a grandiose mansion on Long Island . His neighbor, budding writer Nick Carraway, who works on Wall Street , came to New York City from the Midwest in 1922 in search of the American dream and is fascinated by the bizarre bachelor's lavish parties and decadent hobbies. At one of these parties, Nick meets Gatsby personally and is asked by him to reunite him with Daisy Buchanan, a cousin of Nick who had a love affair with Gatsby five years earlier. Daisy is already married to the wealthy Tom Buchanan. However, she begins a relationship with Gatsby.
When Daisy, urged by Gatsby, wants to tell Tom that she will break up with him, Tom provokes Gatsby so much that he gets angry. Daisy then begins to doubt whether she really wants to leave her husband for Gatsby. Tom had previously arranged an afternoon together in a city hotel. Tom sends Daisy and Gatsby ahead by car; he himself drives behind in his own car with Nick and Jordan, who are also invited. On the way back from the hotel, Daisy, who was behind the wheel, accidentally runs over Myrtle Wilson, her husband's lover. After a witness saw Wilson being run over by a yellow car, Gatsby is found guilty and therefore shot by Wilson's husband.
The only one who appears at Gatsby's funeral is Nick, while Daisy prefers to travel with husband Tom and their daughter.
production
Baz Luhrmann ended his five-year absence from the big screen with The Great Gatsby . Filming began in Sydney in September 2011 . Luhrmann's version of the great Gatsby has to be measured not only by the novel , but also by the film adaptation from 1974, which has long since become classic . At that time Robert Redford played the main role , the costumes were designed by Ralph Lauren .
Production costs were estimated at 125 million US dollars .
Movie set
The Beacon Towers mansion on Long Island, which many experts see as Fitzgerald's source of inspiration for Jay Gatsby's mansion, was also used as a template for the film set. The exterior scenes were filmed in front of the International College of Management in Sydney.
When it came to the interior, designer Catherine Martin said she was heavily influenced by Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann . So many elements in the Art Deco style were created . Particularly noteworthy are the two-story bedroom, the ballroom and the opulent entrance hall.
The second great mansion in the film, Tom Buchanan's Estate, was inspired by Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island.

background
The film adaptation is based on the novel The Great Gatsby , written by Francis Scott Fitzgerald in 1925 , one of the most tragic love dramas of the Roaring Twenties . It is the fifth US film adaptation - four for the cinema (1926, 1949, 1974 and 2013), one for television (2000) - of this material. The first movie adaptation was made under the direction of Herbert Brenon just one year after the novel was published .
But it was not until five decades later that authors like Truman Capote tried - initially in vain - to find an adequate script adaptation of the story of the novel. Finally, Francis Ford Coppola ( The Godfather ), as a screenwriter, succeeded in shortening the material true to the work and still Hollywood-fair to a good two hours of film length. Director Jack Clayton filmed Coppola's script in 1974 with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow .
Trivia
According to director Luhrmann, there is a geographical connection between the novel and the city of Cannes , where the film opened the 2013 film festival there: Fitzgerald wrote some passages of the novel just a few kilometers from Cannes in a villa in Valescure near Saint-Raphaël .
In the film you can see some skyscrapers that did not exist in 1922. For example, the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building are currently in the construction phase. In fact, construction did not begin until 1928 or 1930. On the other hand, historical skyscrapers such as the Singer Building and the office towers above the Hudson Terminal in Lower Manhattan are missing in the film . Both building complexes were only demolished in the 1960s.
On the entrance gate to Gatsby's property, which he claims to come from Normandy , is the Latin motto: “Ad Finem Fidelis” (German: “Faithful to the end”).

Reviews
“Visually, 'The Great Gatsby' has about the elegance and subtlety of a Scooter song. Hyper, hyper. The camera whizzes down high-rise facades at the pace of hell or shoots repeatedly over the blue bay that separates Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) from his beloved Daisy (Carey Mulligan). Roller coaster or ADHD images are shrill, sterile and nervous. The big party scenes mutate into bombastic, brightly lit hidden objects in which everything is too bright, too much and too fast. This gets your pulse racing and gives you goose bumps on your forearms. You really enjoy hearing scooters, sometimes. "
“Luhrmann remains true to his cinema of unambiguity, but with that he cannot do justice to Fitzgerald's ambivalences. For the tension between fascination and repulsion with which Nick encounters the eponymous figure, he hardly finds a cinematic equivalent. It would have remained the flight forward, the radical escalation, the eradication of the ambivalence through an emphatic decision. The encounter between Gatsby and Luhrmann could have worked out with less content-related and more spiritual fidelity. But at some point the green light also goes out in the cinema, the great Gatsby is just a boor, and Luhrmann's fifth film is only a halfway convincing homage to the 'great American novel of the 20th century'.
