Domenico Volpati (born August 19, 1951 in Novara ) is a former Italian football player. He was part of the famous team from Hellas Verona , which won the Italian football championship in 1985 and continued to play for Como Calcio and Torino Calcio, among others .

Career

Domenico Volpati was born on August 19, 1951 in the Piedmont city of Novara . He also spent the first years of his life in the province of Novara , at the club AC Borgomanero , which is located there, where Volpati took his first steps as a footballer and made the leap into the adult team there. From 1968 to 1970 active for the lower class club for two years, Volpati aroused the interest of Solbiatese Arno Calcio, a club that was still clearly active in the amateur field, but was already higher class than Borgomanero. At Solbiatese he was also coached for a year by Osvaldo Bagnoli , who had his first coaching station there from 1973 to 1974. Years later, Domenico Volpati would celebrate the greatest success of his career under Bagnoli.

At Solbiatese he stayed from 1970 to 1975 and made 132 league games and eleven goals for the team during this time. In the summer of 1975 he then signed a working paper with AC Reggiana . Twenty years before its most successful period, however, this club was still in the lowlands of amateur football. Volpati became a regular, showed good performances and was transferred to FC Como after only one season at AC Reggiana , where he played for the second time under Bagnoli. In Como , Domenico Volpati played second-rate football for the first time, and in the two years he played there, positions in the top third of the table were achieved. In the summer of 1978 Domenico Volpati left FC Como and joined AC Monza Brianza , where he subsequently acted for a season and made 34 league games with one goal.

Due to his performances in the Monza jersey, Volpati was also interesting for the first division club Torino Calcio , at that time one of the top teams in Italy. Volpati made his Serie A debut under coach Luigi Radice and had two very successful seasons at Torino Calcio. The team around players such as Paolino Pulici , Francesco Graziani or Renato Zaccarelli reached the final of the Coppa Italia twice in a row , but both times they lost to AS Roma , with both final defeats only came on penalties. At league level, third place was achieved in Serie A 1979/80 and thus qualification for the UEFA Cup 1980/81 , where the end came in the third round against the Swiss representative Grasshopper Club Zurich .

In 1981 Volpati left Torino Calcio and joined Brescia Calcio , where he came to 34 Serie B games in one year . In the same competition, Hellas Verona was very successful and rose to the Serie A as a second division champion. Verona then undertook a number of commitments, including Domenico Volpati from Brescia . Under his old coach Osvaldo Bagnoli, Domenico Volpati developed into a regular player in a top team that would go down in the history of Italian football as Verona dei Miracoli . After not only securing relegation but also qualifying for the 1983/84 UEFA Cup with fourth place in Serie A in 1982/83 , the team started a very successful phase. In 1983 and 1984 they reached the final of the Coppa Italia twice in a row. However, you had to give up Juventus Turin in 1983 and AS Roma in 1984. Hellas Verona achieved the big hit in Serie A in 1984/85 . Completely surprisingly, the team around players like the German Hans-Peter Briegel , the Dane Preben Elkjær Larsen or the Italian Antonio Di Gennaro secured the Italian championship title. In the season in which, after previous reforms, the established clubs were noticeably far behind, they were first with four points ahead of Torino Calcio. To this day, the championship title from 1985 represents the greatest success in the history of the Hellas Verona club, after winning the title things slowly went downhill for the club. Up until 1990 they played first class, made a few appearances in Europe, but ultimately they crashed into the third division.

Domenico Volpati played for Hellas Verona until 1988. He made a total of 165 league appearances in the Hellas jersey from 1982 to 1988 and scored two goals. Then he let his football career end with third division AC Mantova . In the summer of 1989, Domenico Volpati's career finally ended at the age of 38.
