In the year 1859 the "advance payment association to Gardelegen" was founded in Gardelegen. Around 1900 it was farmers in the surrounding villages who founded the savings and loan funds (SDK). In 1948 the name was changed to Raiffeisenkasse, then to Agricultural Village Cooperatives and then to the Association of Mutual Farmers Aid (VdgB) and the Farmers Trade Cooperative (BHG).

The Deutsche Bauern-Bank was opened in Gardelegen in 1951 and then merged with the Raiffeisenbank Altmark Gardelegen eG in 1990. In 1991 another merger took place in Gardelegen. Volksbank Gardelegen eG and Raiffeisenbank Altmark Gardelegen eG merged to form what was then Raiffeisen-Volksbank eG, now Volksbank eG, Gardelegen.
