Florence + the Machine (pronounced Florence and the Machine ) is an English band around the singer-songwriter Florence Leontine Mary Welch (born August 28, 1986 in London ) in collaboration with other musicians. The debut album Lungs was released on July 6, 2009 and peaked at number one in the UK . In total, over 6 million albums have been sold worldwide to date. The band's music is a mix of indie , folk , rock , pop and soul .
Members
The lead singer of the band is Florence Welch. Born and raised in Camberwell , South London , she attended the Camberwell College of Arts there , where she dropped out of her Art Foundation training to pursue her music career. In the 2011 Top 20 Young Music Millionaires Under 30 category, Florence Welch was ranked 14th in the UK with £ 5m .
The addition "The Machine" refers to Welch's longtime friend and co-founder of the band Isabella Summers, who was involved in the writing of the first songs and who plays keyboard in the accompanying band. Sometimes this can only consist of piano and drums, but mostly more musicians are involved, including those with whom she has worked for a long time. At the moment, the band consists of eight other members: Isabella Summers (keyboard, backing vocals), Robert Ackroyd (guitar), Loren Humphrey (drums), Tom Monger (harp, xylophone), Hazel Mills (keyboard, backing vocals), Aku Orraca-Tetteh (Percussion, backing vocals), Dionne Douglas (violin, backing vocals) and Cyrus Bayandor (bass).
history
2007: foundation
The band's name came from an earlier collaboration between Welch and Isabella Summers, nicknamed "Machine". The first name "Florence Robot / Isa Machine" came about shortly before Welch's first appearance because she couldn't think of a better name. Since this name seemed too long and inappropriate to her, it was later shortened to "Florence + the Machine".
In 2007 Welch recorded songs with the band Ashok , which appeared on their album. This album contained the song Happy Slap , the earliest version of the later single Kiss With a Fist . At the end of 2006, she finally met her current manager, Mairead Nash, who she followed drunk to the bathroom at an event and sang Etta James' Something's Got a Hold on Me to her . She became known through her appearances on BBC Introducing and as the opening act for MGMT . This was followed by appearances at music festivals in Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds.
2008–2010: Lungs and Between Two Lungs
On February 18, 2009 she received the second "Critics Choice" - BRIT Award (the first was given to singer Adele in 2008 ), which is only awarded to artists who have not yet released a debut album. This made her very popular in her home country.
