Alexander Herbert Reginald St. John Brenon (born January 13, 1880 in Dublin , † June 21, 1958 in Los Angeles ) was an American director , screenwriter and actor of Irish origin.

Life

Brenon came to the United States as a teenager and started out as an actor in the early years of silent cinema. From 1909 he wrote his first scripts on behalf of Carl Laemmle for his Imperial Company ( IMP ), which later became Universal Studios . In 1912 he first directed the film All for Her and quickly rose to become one of the most renowned directors of the era. The following year he made Annette Kellerman a star in Neptune's Daughter . In the 1910s Brenon was employed by the old Fox Studios, for example as the director of Theda Bara in The two Orphans , in which he also appeared as an actor. With Alla Nazimova he directed War Brides, an anti-war film and one of the great successes for Nazimova.

Brenon had his greatest artistic success with the first film adaptation of Peter Pan , which made Betty Bronson a star in 1924. Other successes were the adaptation of The Great Gatsby with Warner Baxter and the adaptation of Beau Geste with Ronald Colman and Alice Joyce , both of which hit the screen in 1926. Brenon received the Photoplay Award for Beau Geste .

For his drama Captain Sorrell and his son (Sorrel and Son) , he received an Oscar nomination for best director in 1927 . His last financial successes in 1928 included Laugh, Clown, Laugh with Lon Chaney and the 15-year-old Loretta Young . With the advent of talkies, Brenon's career ebbed very quickly. Films like Transgression from 1931 clearly show how little he got along with the new medium. After around 130 films, he retired from the film business in 1940.
