One Night in Miami is a Regina King drama film that will premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2020 and will be screened shortly after at the Toronto International Film Festival . The film is based on the play of the same name by Kemp Powers from 2013, which also adapted it for the film. The story about the evening of the victory of Cassius Clay in February 1964 was enriched with an encounter and fictional conversations with Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown.

On the night of February 25, 1964, young Cassius Clay becomes the new heavyweight boxing world champion at the Miami Beach Convention Center after an unexpected victory over Sonny Liston. Clay spends the rest of the evening at the Hampton House Motel in Miami's African American suburb of Overtown and celebrates with Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown, who are among his closest friends. The four icons and trailblazers of the Black Power movement talk about their shared responsibility as influencers and their fight for equality for all African Americans.

It is in One Night in Miami to the directorial debut of Oscar-winning actress Regina King in a movie. The screenplay was written by Kemp Powers and is based on his play of the same name, which premiered in 2013 at the Rogue Machine Theater in Los Angeles. Powers received the Ted Schmitt Award for his work that same year.
