Penguin Bloom is a film directed by Glendyn Ivin that will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2020 and is set to hit Australian theaters later this year. The film is based on the book Penguin Bloom - The Little Bird That Saved Our Family by Cameron Bloom and Bradley Trevor Greive, which in turn tells a true story.

action

The nurse Sam Bloom is seriously injured when she falls from a balcony while on vacation with husband Cameron and their three sons in Thailand. From then on, she is paralyzed from the waist down, which is a tough test for the entire family. After her rehab, Sam falls into a deep depression, but then one day one of her sons brings home an injured flute bird . They call it Penguin because of its black and white plumage. From then on, the bird, which urgently needs your help, lets Sam forget her own pain and gives her new courage.

background

An Australian Magpie, also known as Flute bird is called

Noah, the middle son of the Bloom family in Australia , brought home one afternoon a magpie girl who was only a few days old, also known as the flute bird . The chick was injured and could barely move. In fact, the Magpies, which are very common in Australia, do not enjoy a particularly good reputation and are usually described there as a species of magpies, although strictly speaking they belong to the crow family. This young bird, however, became tame and often did not behave at all like its fellow species. This was also the case with mother Sam Bloom , a paraplegic former nurse and later parakanut who competed in the Paralympics for her country's national team. The family revived the Magpie chick and named it "Penguin" because of its black and white plumage. Again and again Penguin came to bed with the family members to “cuddle”, who in addition to son Noah and mother Sam also included father Cameron and sons Oli and Rueben. Penguin was also part of the family for two years, during which time around 14,000 photos were taken by family man and photographer Cameron Bloom, which he later published in a book that quickly became a bestseller.

What is special about the story is the connection between Penguin and mother Sam Bloom, because the bird had brought the 45-year-old out of her depression because she would have regained the feeling of being needed by pimping the bird. Penguin sat with her when she cooked, lay on the mat with Sam during rehab, and they took a shower together. She is convinced: “This is how Penguin saved our family.” When Penguin finally learned to fly, it was a moving moment for mother Sam Bloom: “When I saw Penguin flying after she was so injured, I thought: If so a little bird can do it, so can I. ”Later the bird left the family and only came back once, on the 13th birthday of son Rueben. The book was also published in Germany. The book, written by Cameron Bloom and Bradley Trevor Greive under the title Penguin Bloom - The Little Bird That Saved Our Family, was translated into German by Ralf Pannowitsch .
