Paracanoe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paracanoe (also: Parakanu or Paracanoeing ) is the name of a canoeing discipline for people with disabilities . The sports equipment used, a specially adapted racing canoe, is also known as a paracanoe .

Paracanoe competitions were first held in Dartmouth (Canada) in 2009 as part of the Canoe Racing World Championships and have been an official part of the competition program since the 2010 World Championships in Poznan . Among the Paralympic Summer Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro paracanoe classification was also in the program of the Paralympic Games added.

Competitions

Paracanoeing competitions are held according to (adapted) rules of canoe racing over a distance of 200 m in fixed lanes. The division of the competition classes is based on the mobility of legs (L for leg ), arms (A for arm ) and trunk (T for trunk ).

The 2011 World Cup program included races in eight classes, five for men and three for women.

Boats

There are one kayaks (K-1) and outrigger canoes used (Va'as / V-1). For every paracanoe athlete, the seat and sometimes the paddle is individually adapted. There are a number of specialized manufacturers for this.

Starting classes

In ICF , there are three starting classes, the differences in the mobility of the legs, arms and torso of the athletes represent. These apply to both boat classes and are independent of gender.

  • KL1 / VL1 (kayak / Va'a Level 1)
no or very limited trunk function, no leg function
  • KL2 / VL2 (kayak / Va'a Level 2)
partial trunk and leg function, upright sitting in the kayak possible
  • KL3 / VL3 (kayak / Va'a Level 3)
full trunk and partially leg function, slightly bent forward sitting possible, at least one leg (or prosthesis) can be fully used

background

The International Canoeing Federation (ICF) has been promoting the integration of people with disabilities since the 2000s as part of its Sports For All program . In contrast to other sports, the concept was followed to organize the competitions together with those for non-disabled people, which was (and is) a particular challenge for the organizers, as barrier-free access to essential functional areas of the regatta course must be ensured.

In 2009, demonstration races in the Paracanoe were held in Dartmouth for the first time as part of the World Championships, with participants from eleven nations taking part; in 2010 it became the official World Cup sport with 28 nations. Since 2009 there are also Paracanoe European Championships.

Paracanoe in Germany

Like the non-disabled canoeists, the Paracanoe athletes are organized in the German Canoe Association (DKV), which looks after the cadre athletes in coordination with the German Disabled Sports Association. Many DKV clubs now offer paracanoe sports. Since 2011, the German Paracanoe champions have been determined together with the non-disabled athletes as part of the German Canoe Racing Championships.
