occupation

Who knows where (Original title: Et Maintenant, On Va Où? ) Is a French-Lebanese film by the director Nadine Labaki from 2011 . The film screened at the 2011 Cannes International Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard series and won the Audience Award at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival .

action

In a village somewhere in Lebanon , Christians and Muslims live next door to each other. There have always been bloody conflicts in the past and so there are many young men lying in the cemetery. Even in the present there are always conflicts, especially between men. They usually no longer know the reasons for this themselves and usually even the little things are enough. Although the imam, the priest and the women try everything to bring the men to their senses, the situation is becoming increasingly heated. But women have had enough of the eternal bloodshed.

The villagers try out some unusual activities together, in which the only television in the village, a Ukrainian table dance troupe and homemade hash cookies play key roles. In the end, the women succeed in rendering the men's weapons harmless and by reversing roles they can convince the men of the absurdity of their behavior.

background

Four years after her debut film Caramel , which played in a Beirut beauty salon, director, screenwriter and leading actress Nadine Labaki is releasing her second feature film, this time in a nameless country that is easy to recognize as Lebanon. It depicts the difficult coexistence of Christians and Muslims, but also shows that peaceful coexistence in the Middle East is a dream for the future that is worth fighting for. Lebanon announced Labaki's tragic comedy in the category “Best Foreign Language Film” for an Oscar .

reception

“Nadine Labaki, who herself takes on one of the leading roles, relies on the logic and strength of women, she uses everything that the film repertoire has to offer, from musicals decorated with songs to drama and tragedy to comedy. Not only the often convincing amateur actors contribute to the authenticity, but also the original locations where the mosque and church stand side by side, as in the story "
