Caramel is a 2007 Lebanese-French feature film directed by Nadine Labaki .

action

The film is set in Beirut and tells of the life situations of six women. Three of them, Layale, Nisrine and Rima, work in the small beauty salon Si Belle .

Layale has a love affair with Rabih, a married man. He meets with her whenever he has time. In addition, their rendezvous always take place in the car and on remote industrial sites. And so Layale suspects that their relationship has no future. Layale still lives with her parents, who have long been waiting for her to finally get married, so she keeps her affair a secret from them. Since Rabih does not want to leave his wife Christine for Layale, Layale begins to wonder what is special about Christine. Nisrine organizes a promotion that Christine becomes a customer in the salon. This is how Layale gets to know and appreciate her, and she realizes that she has to end the relationship with Rabih. Maybe the policeman Youssef, who has secretly loved Layale for a long time, is the right man for the future.

The Muslim Nisrine is about to get married. Her problem is that she is no longer a virgin. Only her friends know about it and accompany her to an appointment with the doctor, during which the deficiency is to be corrected.

Rima, the third colleague, rejects the parcel deliverer's advances every evening because she feels drawn to women. She was particularly fascinated by a certain customer.

In the vicinity of the salon, the two old, unmarried sisters Rose and Lili live in a symbiotic relationship in the same apartment and sleep in the same bed. Lili is mentally confused, she removes traffic tickets from cars, believing them to be letters from her lovers, and so Rose has taken care of her in brotherly love. Rose earns their living by tailoring alterations. When the elegant older Mr. Charles wants to have his suit shortened and a tender relationship emerges between him and Rose, Lili reacts jealously and torpedoes an appointment between the two of them.

The aging casual actress Jamale, a regular at Salon Si Belle , faces competition from younger women in often humiliating castings and yet knows that she can only lose.

Reviews

“A sensual and warm-hearted comedy that tells about the everyday lives of very different women in Beirut. In the loosely interwoven episodes, the film depicts turning points in the lives of the main characters, which are about love and responsibility, about tradition and modernity, about Christianity and Islam. "

“Director Labaki manages the balancing act between engagement and entertainment without any effort. She stays close to her fundamental questions and is superbly supported by her amateur actresses, who know very well what and how much is at stake here. For the western viewer, it is a humorous approach to the problems of women in an explosively mixed society between awakening and oppression. "

- Berliner Zeitung , April 3, 2008

" Caramel is not a woman's film in the usual sense, but a wonderful, erotic ode to the women of Lebanon, to their courage, their pragmatism, their dreams and all the little obstacles that stand in the way of these dreams."
