Marleen Gorris (born December 9, 1948 in Roermond ) is a Dutch screenwriter and film director .

Life

Gorris studied English and theater studies at the universities in Groningen and Amsterdam and obtained her master's degree in Birmingham . With her debut film Die Stille um Christine M. , she made her breakthrough in her home country in 1982. The film was voted best film of the year in the Netherlands. Marleen Gorris had written the script for the film and originally wanted Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman to make a film. After the success as a director, she stayed true to her new profession and continued to film her own scripts. In 1992 she realized the five-part series "Tales from the Street" (30 minutes each) for Danish television.

She experienced her greatest success in 1996, when her film Antonia's World won an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film . It was also the first win for a woman in this category. Antonia's world with Willeke van Ammelrooy in the leading role was the final international breakthrough for the Dutch filmmaker, who then received the offer to film the novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf . This time the screenplay was written by the British Eileen Atkins and the main role was cast by Vanessa Redgrave . Gorris led in June 1998 directed the woman Western Come west with me from a screenplay by Craig Bolotin on the play Abundance of Beth Henley . In 2000, she staged the historical drama Lushin's Defense, based on the model by Vladimir Nabokov , with John Turturro and Emily Watson in the leading roles.

In February 2006, Marleen Gorris was a member of the jury at the 2006 Berlinale .
