Extant is an American science fiction series, the plot of which also includes facets of mystery and drama . The series was developed by Mickey Fisher . In it an astronaut is accompanied after a long space mission, who tries to fathom her inexplicable pregnancy . It first aired in the United States on July 9, 2014 on CBS . In Austria, the first season was broadcast on ORF Eins from June 1 to July 6, 2015. In Germany, it was shown from June 5 to July 10, 2015 on sixx .
action
Molly Woods is an astronaut who tries to reintegrate into her family after a 13-month mission in space . In the course of the first episode, she discovers that she is pregnant even though she was alone in her spaceship. However, she remembers an inexplicable encounter with her deceased friend, although the surveillance cameras do not show a second person. Molly deleted the recordings because she wanted to prevent them from being compromised .
John Woods is a scientist who equipped a humanoid robot called Ethan known as "Humanic" with artificial intelligence and calls him his son. Ethan is the prototype of a project funded by Hideki Yasumoto.
Alan Sparks, a senior executive at Yasumoto Corporation, disbelieves Molly's allegation that she accidentally deleted the video and urges Yasumoto to fund her husband's project and thereby create a closer bond with the family.
Yasumoto is terminally ill and uses an extraterrestrial substance to extend his life. It turns out in the course of the first season that he found the origin of this substance in space and initiated the space mission. Molly Woods surgically removes the fetus, which is growing faster than average, which is then locked up for examination. It turns out that the fetus is a hybrid and can read and control people's minds. This escapes with the help of Sparks and then tries to guide other life forms towards earth. A new shuttle mission is then forced to be carried out by Molly. In the course of this, she comes into contact with the extraterrestrial life form again.
In the second season the invasion of the earth by alien hybrids is the theme. The American government produces combat humanoids to deal with the threat. Molly Woods is also slowly transforming into a hybrid. Later, the combat humanoids, guided by the risk-assessing supercomputer TAALR, also turn against humanity. Ultimately, with the assistance of the hybrids, all combat humanoids will be destroyed and humanity will be informed of the existence of the hybrids while the TAALR-KI loads itself into a humanic body and submerges itself before its main system can be destroyed.
Production and broadcast
After the great success of the science fiction series Under the Dome , also produced by Amblin Entertainment , the television station CBS commissioned a first season with 13 episodes for broadcast as a summer series in August 2013. The series was developed by Mickey Fisher, who wrote the script and also acts as a producer. Behind the project, which is being produced by Amblin Entertainment and CBS Television Studios , is the successful producer Steven Spielberg , who is also involved as a producer on the television series.
The central female lead was awarded to Oscar winner Halle Berry in October 2013 . In the weeks and months that followed, Pierce Gagnon and Hiroyuki Sanada received other leading roles. In early 2014, Goran Višnjić , Michael O'Neill , Camryn Manheim and Grace Gummer joined the main cast of the television series.
Filming for the first season began on February 10, 2014 in Los Angeles .
In October 2014, the US broadcaster CBS extended the series by a second season, which began broadcasting in the summer of 2015. Some changes have been made for these. So returned Hiroyuki Sanada and Michael O'Neill not return to the series, while Goran Visnjic and Camryn Manheim only appeared in a recurring feature. In addition, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was hired for a new lead role.
Due to poor audience ratings during the second season, the series was discontinued in October 2015.
The ORF discontinued the second season of the series after the first episode due to the low audience rate (49,000 viewers, 3% market share). The broadcaster Sixx broadcast the second season of 2016 weekly in double episodes, but also struggled with below-average ratings.

reception
Extant was recognized as one of seven series in the Most Promising New Series category at the Critics' Choice Television Awards 2014 .
“Extant takes on a lot - from posthumanity to post-trauma, from alien invasion to resurrection - but it is getting the hang of it. Protagonist Molly experiences classic horror moments, but Halle Berry goes to extremes - without the rest of the series disappearing behind her performance. "
