action

Fashion designer Mary Haines is married to a wealthy financial entrepreneur and has an 11-year-old daughter. Her husband starts an affair with the perfume seller Crystal Allen. Her best friend, editor Sylvia Fowler, learns of the affair, which she is initially hiding from Mary. This only happens to learn the truth.

Haines separates from her husband and is initially devastated, but after a while she begins to realize her dream of her own, successful fashion collection. Eventually she wins her husband back too.

Reviews

The reviews of the film were mostly negative, Rotten Tomatoes gave the film an extremely negative rating of 13% with the critical consensus: “ The Women is a toothless remake of the 1939 classic, it lacks the charm, spirit and irresistible protagonists of the original . "

Peter Debruge wrote in Variety magazine on Sept. 11, 2008 that English is doing little to adapt history to modern times. They try to create a sense of wellbeing similar to the films by Nancy Meyers and Nora Ephron . Many behaviors shown would appear unnatural; some gags wouldn't work. Ryan exudes a similar charm as in the comedy Harry and Sally .

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on September 11, 2008 that the film showed some of the actresses he admired in top form. The film is not great - it is too melodramatic and contains too many dialogues. However, it offers well-written, well-executed, and well-acted entertainment.

The lexicon of international films ruled: "The attempt to remake the classic film of the same name by George Cukor (1939) fails because of the unreflective juxtaposition of misogynistic clichés, bad actresses and the inability of the director to stage dialog and situational humor on the screen."

backgrounds

The film was shot in New York City , Boston , a few other locations in Massachusetts and Connecticut , among others . Its production amounted to an estimated 16.5 million US dollars . The film opened in US and British cinemas on September 12, 2008. The German theatrical release was on December 11, 2008. In US cinemas, the film grossed around 26.7 million US dollars. A characteristic of The Women is that no male person appears in the entire film, even when walking through the big city, all portraits and sculptures of men have been replaced by depictions of women. An exception is one of the last scenes in the film, in which Edie gives birth to her fifth child, a boy.
