Angelina Jolie plays the supermodel Gia Carangi , who rose to fame in New York in the early 1980s , became a drug addict, and entered into a lesbian relationship with make-up artist Linda. Carangi was one of the first publicly known women to die of AIDS .

Reviews

The film received positive reviews. At the same time, the plot attracted a lot of public attention, Angelina Jolie was asked about her lesbian love scenes in numerous interviews.

Awards

The film was nominated for six Emmys in 1998 ( Best Editing , Best Actress , Best Television Film , Best Screenplay for a Television Film , Best Casting and Best Costume Design ) and was awarded the coveted television award in the Best Editing category.

Leading actress Angelina Jolie received the Golden Globe for best actress in a television film the following year , and Faye Dunaway received the award for best supporting actress .

Trivia

There were around 200 applications for the lead role, but screenwriter Michael Cristofer pressed Angelina Jolie to take on the role. She refused at first, because she usually practices method acting and was afraid of falling into the role of a heroin addict. She reported about her fears u. a. in an interview for Girlfriends magazine 12/1997. The childish Gia played the then completely unknown Mila Kunis in one of her first roles.

DVD

The German DVD was released on July 18, 2008 by Warner Bros. It is uncut and has the age rating FSK 12.
