Gerald McRaney (born August 19, 1947 in Collins , Covington County , Mississippi ) is an American actor . He has appeared in over 80 television and film productions and is a frequent guest star in television series.

Life

At the age of 14, a knee injury prevented him from pursuing American football - his great passion - so he looked to other pursuits. He became involved in the acting course at his junior high school. He broke off later acting studies at the University of Mississippi.

In 1967, after marrying Beverly Root, he got a job as assistant stage manager at a theater in New Orleans . On the side, he initially worked on an oil field in Louisiana to supplement his low income a little before he was finally allowed to present himself on the stage of the theater. Then he managed to get hold of some film roles, so that he could also be seen in films from 1969.

In 1971, after divorcing his wife, Gerald McRaney moved to Los Angeles to continue working on his acting career. Numerous supporting roles in television series followed. He finally made his breakthrough with Smoking Colts . From 1981 to 1989 he played alongside Jameson Parker in the lead role in the series Simon & Simon , which made him famous throughout the country.

From 1989 to 1993 he played the title role in the comedy series Major Dad , from 1996 to 1998 the role of Russell Greene in the television series A Touch of Heaven ( Touched by an Angel ). He took up the role as a family man in the television series Ein Wink des Himmels ( Promised Land ) from 1996 to 1999. In the western series Deadwood (2005-2006) McRaney portrayed the American businessman and multimillionaire George Hearst . He also played the influential multi-billionaire Raymond Tusk in the political series House of Cards from 2013 to 2014 . For his portrayal of Dr. Nathan Katowski won an Emmy for Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2017 on NBC's This Is Us series .

With his third wife, the actress Delta Burke , whom he married on May 28, 1989, he lives in seclusion on a farm in Mississippi.

In 1992 he accompanied George HW Bush on his advertising campaign for re-election as President of the United States of America.
