Major Dad is an American sitcom starring Gerald McRaney , produced by Universal Television for the US broadcaster CBS and premiered on the US broadcaster CBS from September 17, 1989 to April 16, 1993. The series consists of four seasons and 96 episodes. The German-language first broadcast was broadcast by RTL plus from December 1991.

Major John MacGillis is a Marine Corps officer stationed as an instructor at Camp Singleton in San Diego , California . He marries the liberal reporter Polly Cooper, who brings three daughters into the marriage, whom he then adopts. Constant conflicts then develop due to the fundamentally opposing views of the family members, which are humorously resolved. At the beginning of the second season, the family moves to another barracks in Virginia due to MacGillis' transfer .
