Saldenheim is first mentioned in a document in 1193, and in 1222 a Cholo von Saldenhofen. Later the castle belonged to the Lords of Pettau , who sold it to Otto von Liechtenstein and Murau in 1348. In the Hungarian War the Liechtensteiners were allies of the Hungarians, which is why Emperor Friedrich III. storm and destroy the castle. The Liechtensteiners then built the castle. After this branch of the family died out, it came to the Windischgrätz , but fell into disrepair in the 18th century. After several changes of ownership at the beginning of the 19th century, Georg Kometer, Baron von Trübein, bought it in 1844. He had the castle rebuilt. The existing structure was repaired and - in contrast to the prevailing fashion - romantic décor was dispensed with. The exterior and the courtyard look like they did in the 17th century.

Building description

The castle is two-story and elongated over an irregular floor plan . The small, open inner courtyard has pillar arcades on both floors , and there is an additional staircase in the southeast corner . The western front of the building is interrupted by a three-story tower. The southwest corner has a bay window on corbel consoles . On the east side is the gate tower with an ogival entrance portal. This carries the Kometter-Fritsch coat of arms.

Trinity Chapel

The castle chapel of the Holy Trinity was built in 1668 according to the building inscription by Johann Friedrich von Windischgraetz, the consecration took place in 1670. It was probably preceded by a Gothic double chapel. A chapel was first mentioned in 1417. The building is tall and slender, the choir has not drawn in much. The nave and choir are barrel-vaulted with stitch caps . The walled organ gallery on the south side is three-axis and rests on two Tuscan columns and round arches . The high altar dates from 1668, the two side altars also from the 17th century.
