At the end of the road - A true story of lies is an internationally produced film drama by Aaron Schneider from 2009.
action
Felix Bush is an old, eccentric hermit who has lived in complete isolation in a cabin in the woods for 40 years. Many stories are told about him in the nearby town. Felix himself still doesn't seem to have processed an event from the past, because he has nightmares with a burning house and speaks to a picture of a young woman.
In the 1930s he went to the local priest, presented him with a thick wad of money and asked for a funeral ceremony - albeit during his lifetime. However, his request is rejected. The bankrupt undertaker Frank Quinn and his colleague Buddy sense their chance and offer him their services. Felix hires Quinn to organize a big party to which anyone with a story to tell is invited. He gets to work enthusiastically .
Felix runs into Mattie Darrow, whose married sister Mary Lee had a love affair with Felix over 40 years ago. However, Mary Lee died then. Together with Quinn and Buddy, he will go through a transformation in the near future and finally want to come to terms with his past and be forgiven. In a radio broadcast, Felix also announces a raffle for his land at the scheduled funeral service. Anyone who pays five dollars for a ticket can be the winner. Subsequently, Quinn can no longer save himself from bags full of letters with money.
Felix lets Buddy drive him to a priest named Charlie Jackson, whose church he built 40 years ago. It becomes more and more clear to Buddy that there is a terrible secret surrounding Felix, which no one involved wants to reveal. Felix urgently asks Charlie to come to his funeral and tell everything that Felix categorically refuses. But Quinn later persuades Charlie, who is actually arriving on the day of the celebration.
On that day, people flock to Felix's property in large numbers. He speaks to the crowd and tells his own story. When he wanted to run away with Mary Lee, he found that her husband had seriously injured her with a large hammer. He struck him down and hurried to the dying love. Meanwhile, her husband threw a kerosene lamp against the wall and the house caught fire. After Felix bent over Mary Lee, he received a blow on the head and fell out the window, where he then escaped to safety. He feels responsible for the entire act to this day, as he should never have started the affair with Mary Lee. Since then he has been punishing himself by living as a hermit. Finally he asks everyone present for forgiveness.
The raffle of his property will take place. Felix dies shortly after the event. He is buried in a very small circle.
criticism
"An exciting film that is entertaining thanks to good actors and a clever script, but which loses a lot of its appeal when the main character's secret is revealed."
“Well-deserved film people of the older semester enjoy carefully drawn character roles that never cross the line to caricature in this gnarled, yet cheerful and complexly conceived American Gothic backwoods tragic comedy, which is also based on a true and media-widespread incident. At 80, Robert Duvall looks as if he can uproot young trees, Bill Murray steals the show as Quinn, and Lucas Black (Jarhead) manages the feat of not fading in this context. First choice for film gourmets. "
