The screenplay for the film, written by David Gordon Green with Andrew Neel and Mike Roberts , is based on a true story that Brad Land wrote in his 2004 memoir Goat, in which he tells of his harrowing experiences. As in the film, Land himself had undergone such a reception ritual to impress his older brother and hoped that this would lead to a closer brotherly relationship with him.

The role of the younger brother Brad Land, which corresponds to the author of the literary model for the film, was cast with Ben Schnetzer , the American singer and actor Nick Jonas took the role of his older brother Brett.

Jonas, who started his film and singing career as a teenage crush at Disney Channel and had appearances in the television series Hannah Montana , in the films Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam and also in the format Jonas LA , which was tailored to him , started An image change in 2014 after his band, the Jonas Brothers , officially split up in October 2013 and he then started a solo career as a singer and imitated Mark Wahlberg's well-known underwear commercial for Calvin Klein . In October 2014, the television series Kingdom first aired, in which he had to wrestle with his masculinity and a conservative family in the lead role of Nate Kulina. In the TV series Scream Queens , Jonas then played Boone, a member of the student union and charity foundation Dickie Dollar, from 2015. In this role he first had a dark side as a gay serial killer.

Right at the beginning of the filming of Goat , the former curly-headed swarm of teenagers had become an actor who was looking for physical challenges and which, according to Jonas, was able to find his way better into the role of Brett Land in Goat , in which, in addition to the difficulties in the development process of young people Men are mainly concerned with the rituals of masculinity and thus also the dark side of becoming a man, which he wants to start a discussion about, says Jonas. Jonas said about the rituals portrayed in the film that they essentially show today's concept of masculinity and brotherhood, which does not contain the love that one is looking for and actually needs. Nowadays at this age there is a distorted view of what a modern man is due to the inability to be honest with one another. Jonas had already used drugs in his role in Kingdom , and Jonas also admitted private drug and alcohol consumption. Jonas also said he had prepared for his role in Goat at a long binge at Bowling Green , where Bowling Green State University is located. During the Berlinale on February 17, 2016, Jonas admitted that he could no longer remember exactly that night, during which he had to drink a lot of tequilas, but it would have made him feel good about the harassment that is experienced in the film prepared.

Schnetzer, who received his acting training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and plays his younger brother Brad in the film, even though he is a few years older than Jonas in real life, speaks of Goat's provocative film that he hopes will be that this would initiate a rethinking and conversations about masculinity. Schnetzer's attempts to prepare for the role were to have a chat with one of his friends who is a fraternity member. However, he did not want to comment on this, as if he had signed a confidentiality agreement. About the shooting, Schnetzer said, who had to endure greater hardship than his fellow actor Jonas, especially the scene in which they were forced to form a human pyramid wearing only underpants, was tougher than he would have expected.

James Franco , who was also involved in the production of the film, plays an elderly fraternity member in a cameo who shows up at a party.

reception

Reviews

The film was able to convince 77 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes (out of 64 critics in total, as of October 24, 2016).

Andrew Neel himself describes his film as a narrated study of masculinity and wanted to start a conversation about modern masculinity . Jeff Sneider from thewrap.com confirms the success of this attempt and praises Neel's instinct for grasping the recklessness of youth and emphasizes his skill for its sometimes almost nightmarish staging, which is particularly evident in the first attack by the two eerie strangers on Brad. Sneider describes Goat as a dark film about young people that describes the dangers and the mental consequences of physical violence. Sneider praises the entire cast of the film, who are equally excellent from start to finish.

Variety's Peter Debruge puts the key question the film asks as exactly where all American aggression comes from. Christoph Petersen from filmstarts.de also deals with this question and comes to the frightening realization: "The real abyss only opens up for the viewer after visiting the cinema, when he thinks about how the hazing actually affects all the other residents of one Country, in which such a rite is so widespread. After all, the whole thing takes place mainly in the elite schools and it is in particular the later politicians and business leaders, but also the prison directors, who were humiliated here in such an inhuman way and who humiliated themselves . "

Andreas Köhnemann of spielfilm.de sums up his criticism: A bulky youth drama with convincing actors. Despite its harshness, the director does not exploit the subject, but allows reflection on peer pressure and devastating notions of masculinity. Nora Hiller from Berliner Stadtmagazin 030 compares the film with Riot Club , a film in which Ben Schnetzer also starred, and praises Goat not only for the terrifying but honest narrative, but also for a number of young, talented actors who are one with her Become a role, have unused faces and of which the international cinema can use more.
