Jake Picking (born March 2, 1991 in Erlangen , Germany ) is an American actor .

Life

childhood and education

Jake Picking was born in Germany, where his father, a member of the United States Army from West Point , was stationed at the time of his birth (in the US state of Massachusetts , according to other sources ). But he grew up in Boston , Massachusetts. At New York University , Picking was a winger on the ice hockey team there. He broke off his business studies there after a year because he was more interested in acting and student film projects. As a hockey player, Picking appeared in an NHL commercial before he started acting .

Way to acting and first cinema roles

Picking first encountered acting in high school when his math teacher encouraged him to do it. He later took acting lessons from casting agent Carolyn Pickman , who had counted among her protégés Ben Affleck and Matt Damon . She encouraged Picking to take up the acting profession.

Picking eventually began attending auditions in Boston. In 2013 he made his feature film debut with a small role in the youth film Far Far Back (2013) with Steve Carell . This was followed by guest appearances in the series Ironside (2013) and Chasing Life (2014). In order to start a professional acting career, he moved to Los Angeles , where he initially studied old Hollywood films with stars like James Dean , Paul Newman , Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift in his one-room apartment out of loneliness . The move to the West Coast he had given preference to a possible acting degree at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts , although he had no contacts in Los Angeles.

In the following years Picking was regularly represented in cinema productions, but mostly subscribed to small supporting roles or insignificant extras. In 2016 he was part of the ensemble for the drama Goat , which addresses physical and psychological violence in the American college fraternity landscape . In the role of the sadistic oath master Dixon, Picking tormented lead actor Nick Jonas . In the same year he starred in the thriller Boston , which dramatized the attack on the Boston Marathon . Here he took over the part of the policeman Sean Collier, who is shot by the assassins Jochar and Tamerlan Zarnajew (played by Alex Wolff and Themo Melikidze ).

Breakthrough with "Hollywood"

Picking became known to a larger audience in 2020 at the age of 29 through his participation in the Hollywood series produced for the streaming service Netflix . In the fictional miniseries about sexism and homophobia in Hollywood of the 1940s, he starred alongside David Corenswet , Darren Criss and Jeremy Pope as the aspiring film actor Rock Hudson . Picking saw the role of the well-known movie actor (1925–1985), who hid his homosexuality from the public all his life , as a kind of "transition moment" for his career. He hopes to break away from his earlier work with Hollywood . In preparation for filming, Picking Rock had watched Hudson's films without sound to better study his body language. He had also studied spoken interviews with the Hollywood star and the books The Man Who Invented Rock Hudson about Hudson's patron Henry Willson (played by Jim Parsons in the series ) and the Rock Hudson biography All That Heaven Allows by Mark Griffin and Scotty Bowers ' Read book full service . Also in 2020, Joseph Kosinski's action film Top Gun: Maverick is slated for release in US cinemas, in which Picking will be seen alongside Tom Cruise and Miles Teller .

Jake Picking has been passionate about rapping since he was in high school . Although he has not yet published his lyrics, he rapped some of his original lyrics and songs in the 2020 film drama Horse Girl , including the play "Hollywood Kills". He is friends with fellow actors KJ Apa and Charles Melton , with whom he shares the same fitness trainer.
