production

History of origin

As early as October 2010 it was reported that Paramount had submitted an offer to producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Top Gun director Tony Scott for a sequel to be written by Christopher McQuarrie and in which Tom Cruise would appear again in a minor supporting role. The year before, Bruckheimer was approached about a possible sequel, but initially expressed concerns because the TOPGUN program of the United States Navy had changed fundamentally since the first film and the focus in training is now less on spectacular dogfights and more on bombing lie. A year later, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz were announced as the new scriptwriters for the film, although it remained unclear whether Maverick would continue to be the central character. According to the plans of Paramount and the co-financier Skydance Productions around founder David Ellison , who is said to have been a big fan of the original film and the driving force behind the sequel , Top Gun 2 should originally be shot from the beginning of 2013 and hit theaters in 2014. The plot, also based on a story by Peter Craig , should focus on the role of drones in modern air warfare. With the death of Tony Scott in August 2012, however, the film project was temporarily put on hold. Although Bruckheimer confirmed in the following year that the realization of the film was still planned, further information was not announced until June 2015, when Justin Marks was introduced as the new screenwriter. Finally, in June 2017, Joseph Kosinski , who previously worked with Cruise on the 2013 film Oblivion, hired a new director and announced a start date in July 2019.

Cast and score

After the commitment of Tom Cruise for the sequel was determined early on , the return of Val Kilmer was announced in June 2018 . A little later Miles Teller was hired as the son of LTJG Nick "Goose" Bradshaw and Maverick's protégé , after Cruise had previously also conducted test recordings with Glen Powell and Nicholas Hoult . Nonetheless, Powell got another role in the film. This was later followed by the engagements of Jennifer Connelly , Ed Harris , Jon Hamm , Lewis Pullman , Monica Barbaro , Charles Parnell , Jay Ellis , Bashir Salahuddin , Danny Ramirez and Manny Jacinto . Ultimately, the cast was completed by Chelsea Harris , Kara Wang , Jack Schumacher , Greg Tarzan Davis , Jake Picking , Raymond Lee , Jean Louisa Kelly, and Lyliana Wray . Originally, Thomasin McKenzie should also be part of the cast and be seen as the daughter of the character of Connelly. However, due to scheduling conflicts with the Netflix series Lost Girls , she had to leave the project. According to the requirements of the Ministry of Defense, other extras without a military background had to correspond to real soldiers in terms of size, age, weight, uniform, care, appearance and behavior.

As with the previous film, Harold Faltermeyer was responsible for the film music . He received support from Hans Zimmer . Furthermore, took Kenny Loggins a new version of the song Danger Zone on.

Pre-production and shooting

USS Abraham Lincoln (2019)

In the run-up to filming, the filmmakers had to submit the script to the Navy at the Pentagon and, if necessary, have it revised in order to obtain filming permits for military bases and aircraft carriers . It also gave access to military facilities and personnel in California , Nevada, and Washington . The contract included permission to fly planes, mount cameras on and in F / A-18 Super Hornets and helicopters, and access to a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Furthermore, the actors received survival training in the water and training in handling the ejection seat from the Navy . The United States Department of Defense also reviewed the script to ensure that the defense was presented factually and correctly. For this purpose, experts were made available to the film team on the one hand, and on the other hand it was contractually stipulated that the ministry would receive a rough cut prior to publication so that it could be compared with the tonality of the script. The Ministry of Defense also recorded how many planes, ships and ground goods would be required for the film, and compared this data with training plans of fighter squadrons and ships so that real training missions could be seen in the film. In return, however, the production had to guarantee that any film material would be released for review immediately so that sensitive recordings could be deleted or handed over to the Navy if necessary.

Indian Wells Valley

Filming finally began on May 31, 2018 at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego Bay , where they filmed for two days. Filming had to start before July 1 of that year in order for the film project to receive funding from the California state . The estimated budget at the time was $ 140 million. Claudio Miranda , who previously worked with director Kosinski on the film Oblivion , acted as cameraman ; as Production Designer was Jeremy Hindle worked. From August 23-25, aerial operations without actors were recorded on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) . The film was also shot at several Navy bases in California, including the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake . The Indian Wells Valley and the village of Inyokern were also among the locations of the film for two weeks . In December 2018, two-week recordings were made in South Lake Tahoe using low-flying helicopters, motorcycles and artificial smoke. Three months later, the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) served as the backdrop.

The film was shot with an image resolution of about 6K. A new camera system was used, in which six IMAX cameras were used simultaneously within the cockpit . Cruise himself flew a North American P-51 and various helicopters, but was prevented by the Navy from piloting an F / A-18 Super Hornet himself. However, he was allowed to take off and land on an aircraft carrier, which no actor had ever done for a film before. He and the other actors, on the other hand, were given the opportunity to shoot their scenes in real F / A-18 Super Hornets, which were controlled by experienced pilots in order to be able to realistically display the g-forces .

Marketing and Publishing

In June 2017, Cruise revealed in an interview that the sequel would be officially titled Top Gun: Maverick . The first image material was presented in June 2019 at the film fair CineEurope . On July 18, 2019, a first trailer was published as part of the San Diego Comic-Con International , a second followed on December 16, 2019.

Before the film is regularly released in cinemas, it is to be shown exclusively in the Pentagon . In addition, the Ministry of Defense secured film posters and ten film copies so that they could be used for training purposes. The film was originally scheduled to release in US cinemas on July 12, 2019. The US start date was later postponed to June 26, 2020 in order to allow production to work out the complex flight sequences. Later, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the US theatrical release was initially postponed to December 23, 2020 and finally to July 2, 2021.
