San Diego Bay is a natural harbor near San Diego that is 19 kilometers long and 1.6 to 4.8 kilometers wide. On the bay are the cities of San Diego, National City , Chula Vista , Imperial Beach and Coronado . The western boundary of the bay is protected from the Pacific Ocean by a long and narrow strip of land called Silver Strand .

At its northern end this isthmus becomes so wide that it is called the North Island , where the Naval Air Station North Island and the city of Coronado are located. In addition, the US Navy operates two other facilities there, Naval Station San Diego and Naval Base Point Loma at the Ballast Point lighthouse , which is a base for nuclear submarines .

The bay is spanned by the San Diego Coronado Bay Bridge , which opened in 1969 and has a total length of 3,407 meters.

Numerous museum ships lie in the bay, including the USS Midway (CV-41) , today the largest aircraft carrier designed as a museum. The Star of India is also here , the oldest steel sailing ship that is still in good working order.

The shoal at the southern end of the bay is used to evaporate sea water so that salt can be separated from the water .
