Lost Girls is a mystery thriller directed by Liz Garbus that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020 .

On Long Iceland living Mari Gilbert drives the law enforcement officials tirelessly to to to look for their missing, eldest daughter Shannan. When she does her own research, she finds that Shannan was part of an online world of sex workers made up mostly of young working class women. In the process, Mari also gets involved in a series of unsolved murders by the Long Island serial killer.

The film is based on the book Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery by Robert Kolker , in which the latter tells the true story of Mari Gilbert, who investigated the disappearance of her daughter and generated public attention for the still unsolved case of the Long Island serial killer .

The main role of the investigative mother Mari Gilbert was cast with Amy Ryan .

A first trailer was presented in mid-January 2020. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival on January 28, 2020 and was included in Netflix 's programming on March 13, 2020 .
