Liz Garbus

Liz Garbus (* 1969 or 1970) is an American film producer , director and author who starred in 2016 with her documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? about the jazz and blues singer Nina Simone has been nominated for an Oscar . She is also known for her 1999 Oscar-nominated documentary The Farm: Angola, USA , which deals with the lives of some inmates in a maximum security prison.

Life

Liz Garbus, who graduated magna cum laude from Brown University in history and linguistics in 1992 , is one of the most prominent American documentary filmmakers. Garbus is the daughter of the lawyer Martin Garbus, who is very well known in America. Together with her colleague Rory Kennedy , Garbus is a co-founder of Moxie Firecracker Films, founded in 1998. She is married to documentary filmmaker and Emmy award winner Dan Cogan .

Garbus' entry into the film business came in 1986 with an episode of the television series America Undercover , which she directed. In 1993 she was a production manager on the documentary Hookers Hustlers Pimps and Their Johns , and in 1996 she first appeared as a producer on Final Judgment: The Execution of Antonio James , a television film. With her film The Farm: Angola, USA (1998), which accompanies six inmates of the Louisiana State Penitentiary, including a murderer and a rapist, Garbus scored internationally and received much praise from critics. The film was at the Sundance Film Festival presented and awarded at various festivals with a total of six prizes and was nominated for four others, including in 1999 for the Oscar .

The film The Execution of Wanda Jean , which was awarded the Prize of the City of Setúbal - Special Mention in 2002, accompanies Wanda Jean Allen on her journey to death row. Garbus' 2003 documentary Girlhood was named one of the top films of 2003 by LA Weekly magazine. He explores America's legal system and the problem of how children cope with being exposed to domestic violence at an early age. The historical documentation The Nazi Officer's Wife (2003) also deals with violence. She follows the fate of a young woman who was taken to a Nazi internment camp with her mother . Garbus' 2007 documentary Ghosts of Abu Ghraib , which provides insights into notorious Iraqi prisons , also received an award . She received the Primetime Emmy Award for this . For the 2010 documentary Killing in the Name produced by Garbus, director Jed Rothstein received an Oscar nomination in the “Best Documentary Short” category , but lost to Strangers No More . Rothstein's film deals with the subject of Islamic terrorism . The assassination attempt at his wedding, a suicide bomber blew in the air and 27 members of the family of Al-Khaled and his wife Nadia Alami killed, took Ashraf Al-Khaled as an opportunity to perform with victims and perpetrators talks.

The biographical documentary Bobby Fischer Against the World from 2011 is all about the tragic fate of the chess genius Bobby Fischer . With this film Garbus won the Achievement Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival. In the documentary Love, Marilyn (2012), the filmmaker casts intimate glances into Marilyn Monroe's diaries and notes that have not been shown before . Famous colleagues of the actress, such as Adrien Brody , Glenn Close , Viola Davis and Uma Thurman have their say. Entertainment Weekly hailed the film as the miracle of a documentary. The 2013 music documentary Before the Spring: After the Fall, produced by Garbus, is about the history of heavy metal music, a style of rock music. The film received the Jury Prize at the BendFilm Festival.

For her documentary about the life and career of the American jazz and blues singer Nina Simone under the title What Happened, Miss Simone? Garbus is nominated for an Oscar in the category “Best Documentary” in 2016 together with Amy Hobby and Justin Wilkes .
