Joseph Kosinski (born May 3, 1974 ) is an American director .

Life

Kosinski grew up in Marshalltown , Iowa , from 1979 to 1992 .

After graduating from school, he studied mechanical engineering at Stanford University , where a professor recommended that he start studying architecture . He then moved to the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University .

From 2004 he directed various commercials, including for Nike , Chevrolet , BMW and computer games such as Halo 3 and Gears of War . It was through this work that the film producer Sean Bailey became aware of him and convinced Disney to let Kosinski produce a teaser for the planned sequel to the 1982 science fiction film Tron . The screening of the short film entitled TR2N at Comic Con 2008 received outstanding reviews. In 2010 the feature film Tron: Legacy was released , which received a lot of praise for the visual design, but was also criticized for the thin plot. Even so, the film was financially successful with a worldwide box office of over $ 400 million.

In April 2013, Kosinski's second feature film, Oblivion , appeared in which Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman played the leading roles. The script was based on a graphic novel written in 2005 by Kosinski and Arvid Nelson .
