The Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake is a US Navy test site in the western Mojave Desert about 150 miles north of Los Angeles .

The area is characterized by desert landscapes of volcanic origin. Geysers that are still active today are used for geothermal energy .

history

The area was originally home to the Coso - Indians whose culture stretching back 16,000 years as local finds of petroglyphs show. These use the deposits of obsidian to manufacture arrow and lance tips. More than 10,000 artifacts are from the years 5-6000 BC. Known.

During the Second World War , the almost uninhabited desert areas were used as a firing range for airborne weapons.
