David Corenswet

David Corenswet (born July 8, 1993 ) is an American actor . He gained fame primarily through his participation in the Netflix series The Politician (2019) and Hollywood (2020).

Life

Childhood and first theater roles

David Corenswet grew up with an older sister in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . His father, John Corenswet (1955-2019), lawyer and businessman, came from a Jewish family in New Orleans , Louisiana . His grandfather, Sam Corenswet Jr., was president and a member of the organizing committee of the popular Sugar Bowl college football competition . David Corenswet attended the private Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania . At least temporarily he lived in Merion (Pennsylvania). Corenswet was also a finalist of the National Merit Scholarship Program , a US scholarship competition for recognition and university scholarships for high-performing students.

Both Corenswet and his sister were introduced to acting by their father, who had worked in plays after college. At the age of nine, David Corenswet took on his first small role as Bert in a production of Arthur Miller's play All My Sons , directed by Terry Nolen, at the Arden Theater in his hometown. This was followed by further appearances as child actors in the local theater scene on weekends or during the holidays, for example in a performance of Macbeth at the Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival . As an 11-year-old, he was seen in a production of The Forgiving Harvest by the non-profit People's Light and Theater Company . He also appeared at the Walnut Street Theater ( Philadelphia ) in the musical La Vie En Bleu about the life of Pablo Picasso . According to his own information, Corenswet was able to learn the acting trade from well-known stage actors and directors in his hometown in this way. His last theatrical engagement in Philadelphia was at the age of 16 as newspaper boys Joe and Si Crowell in Thornton Wilders Our Town , directed by its explorer Terry Nolen.

Acting training and engagements on television

Despite a love of the theater, Corenswet applied to the University of Pennsylvania to study psychology . There he appeared in a student production of Patrick Hamilton's piece Rope . This experience led him to pursue an acting career. Around the same time he took on the part of Corny Collins in a summer theater production of the musical Hairspray (2012). Corenswet applied to study acting at the Juilliard School , where he was accepted. From 2012 to 2016 he studied at the renowned New York drama school, which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts .

Corenswet made his film debut in 2011 with a major role in Greg Koorhan's award-winning short film Following Chase , for which he also co-wrote the script. During his acting studies he produced the 17-part comedy series Moe & Jerryweather (2014-2016) with Adam Langdon , which was published on the video portal Vimeo . In the project around the eponymous comedy duo, who want to reinvent television, he was also involved as the main actor, screenwriter and editor. From 2015 Corenswet made guest appearances on various American television series, including Elementary (2017) and Instinct (2018).

First leading roles and breakthrough with the series "The Politician"

In 2018 followed a first leading role in the political thriller Affairs of State by Eric Bross , which received little attention from critics and audience , which brought Corenswet comparisons with Armie Hammer . At the side of Thora Birch , Mimi Rogers and Adrian Grenier , he was seen as an ambitious intern Michael Lawrence, who tries to advance his political career in Washington, DC through affairs with a senator's wife and their daughter . Later on, the 193 cm tall actor was often compared to British Superman actor Henry Cavill because of his looks . Also in 2018, Corenswet appeared in flashbacks in an episode of the successful American series House of Cards as the childhood sweetheart of the first lady, Claire Underwood.

His breakthrough as a television actor paved the way for his subsequent collaboration with Ryan Murphy , who used him in the series The Politician (2019) produced for the Netflix streaming service . Although Corenswet had originally auditioned for the supporting role of Ricardo, he was cast as River Barkley, former lover, adversary and nemesis of the title character Ben Platt . Series inventor Murphy, who compared Corenswet to Leonardo DiCaprio , then entrusted him with one of the leading roles in his next series project Hollywood (2020), which was also produced for Netflix. In the fictional miniseries about racism , sexism and homophobia in Hollywood of the 1940s, he can be seen alongside Darren Criss , Jeremy Pope and Laura Harrier as the aspiring film actor Jack Castello.

Although David Corenswet originally suffered from fear of flying , he developed a passion for flying after his father's death.
