Captain Fantastic - Once in the wilderness and back (Original title: Captain Fantastic ) is a tragicomic film drama by Matt Ross , which premiered on January 23, 2016 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . The film was released in US cinemas on July 8, 2016 and in German cinemas on August 18, 2016.

action

Ben, a staunch dropout , lives with his family in the woods on the northwest coast of the USA, away from any civilization . He tries to prepare his six children as well as possible for the difficulties of life through rigorous physical and mental training. That is his idea of being a father. For example, he teaches his children that cola is poisoned water and teaches them to survive in the wild. This also includes shooting wild animals with a knife, which he considers to be close to nature and inevitable for a self-sufficient life . While others celebrate Christmas in December , the family celebrates Noam Chomsky Day because Ben doesn't want his children to believe in a fictional character. He also doesn't like Christians in general. As a result of the upbringing, the children are above average intelligent and also physically better constituted than their peers. They read Middlemarch , know the Bill of Rights by heart and can debate Marxism or string theory . Ben also taught his children to speak openly about death and sex .

As Ben's wife Leslie, attached to a bipolar disorder suffers suicide commits, the family would like the last will of confident Buddhist match, it was burned and a public toilet to be flushed down. Although Leslie's father Jack threatens to call the police if Ben should appear for the funeral, Ben and the children make their way to Leslie's hometown in New Mexico in their blue-painted, converted school bus called "Steve" . They want to prevent the mother from being buried there according to Christian ritual and in a coffin.

Traveling through modern America is difficult for the children because they have had little contact with this world. The special upbringing of the children ensures that they behave conspicuously several times during the trip. And they often marvel in disbelief at the materialism and extravagance of contemporary American culture. The way of life and the views of the relatives they meet also have a strange effect on them, and vice versa. Ben's well-off sister Harper and her husband, with whom Ben and his children are stopping off, raised their children completely differently and consider Ben's upbringing methods to be unrealistic. For his part, Ben thinks little of their educational methods and demonstrates the superiority of his educational program with the knowledge of his youngest daughter. Harper's children, on the other hand, mostly use their cell phones or measure their strength in shooter games, and Ben's children quickly recognize how different they are from their peers.

Arrived in New Mexico, Ben causes a scandal at the funeral ceremony and is thrown out. Nevertheless, the children are warmly welcomed by the grandparents and Ben realizes that he cannot keep his children away from society. So he learns that his eldest son Bodevan has applied to various top universities without his knowledge and with the support of Leslie and ultimately only holds promises in his hands. Furthermore, it is stated that Ben's behavior could in part also have been the cause of Leslie's depression because it overwhelmed Ben's living conditions.

Leslie's father condemns the lifestyle of the dropout family and threatens lawyers if Ben does not allow the children to have a regular life with school attendance. After the second eldest, who wants to stay with the grandparents, goes on a "rescue mission" and the eldest daughter barely escapes a serious injury, Ben finally gives in. He decides to leave his children with their grandparents and says goodbye with a heavy heart. But his children outsmart both Ben and their grandparents and hide in a secret hold of the bus. Now they persuade their father to free the deceased mother after all. Together they exhume Leslie, whose Christian funeral they could not prevent, in order to fulfill her desire for cremation. Ultimately, Bodevan goes to Namibia and Ben moves to a farm with the other children. There they have a life with regular school attendance.

production

Direction and script

The director took Matt Ross , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. For the story of the film, Ross was inspired by his own past: "I spent large parts of my life in the middle of nowhere in Oregon , where my mother was involved in setting up an alternative housing project ." According to Ross, there spent his summers in tipis . This is also clear in the film, says the director. There they had bought land together and wanted to live in harmony with nature , far away from any civilization . Many would have called this a “ hippie commune,” but it all happened in the eighties , not the sixties . “At a certain age, I decided to leave this place to be with young people my age,” says Ross.

Occupation and preparation

The main role of the family man Ben Cash was cast with Viggo Mortensen . The role of his wife Leslie, who can only be seen in flashbacks in the film, was given to Trin Miller . Bodevan, the eldest son, called Bo in the film, is played by George MacKay . Samantha Isler plays the daughter Kielyr, Annalize Basso her twin sister Vespyr. The role of son Rellian was played by Nicholas Hamilton . Shree Crooks plays Zaja, and Charlie Shotwell plays Ben's youngest son, Nai.

A few weeks before filming began, the actors and film crew were brought to the location in western Washington state . Here everyone should prepare for their roles. Ross himself referred to this as a "wilderness training camp". Mortensen was the first to arrive; the actor known as the Method Actor used the time to practice playing with Ben's favorite instrument, the bagpipe , and planted the garden that can also be seen in the film. During this preparatory period, in addition to the main actor, the children and young actors who play Ben's children in the film and who called Mortensen their “Summer Dad” during Camp Mortensen were taught how to make a fire, how to slaughter and skin a deer and how to climb rocks. They also received music lessons and martial arts training in preparation for their role .

During the casting process, it was important that the young actors were physically fit and also had musical talent. Hamilton, seen in the film as one of Ben's sons, has been playing the drums since he was four, and George MacKay was also able to play the guitar. Mortensen himself had a small music career and can, for example, play the harmonica. He has also known hunting and fishing since he was a little boy, but was not trained in climbing because he suffers from a fear of heights. Mortensen's language skills also benefited him in the film, because in the film he not only teaches his children in literature and philosophy, but also in six languages, some of which he speaks himself.

Filming

Filming began in Washington State in July 2014 . The film was shot here in Deception Pass State Park, in Sultan and on the Snohomish River . At Camp Korey in Carnation , the cinematographers had set up the family home, and some scenes were shot in Index and a nearby forest. Additional filming took place at Gold Bar and Elementary School there, and the hospital scenes were filmed at Evergreenhealth Hospital in Kirkland . Later that summer was filmed in New Mexico , including in the cities of Albuquerque , Las Cruces and Mesilla . Shooting ended after 39 days.

Due to existing laws against child labor in the USA, the six young actors involved were not allowed to shoot more than six hours a day.

Film music

The score is by Alex Somers . The soundtrack Music from the Film Captain Fantastic comprises 24 songs and was released on July 8, 2016. Mihnea Manduteanu describes Somers' work as one of the best of the year so far, believes that the film music should polarize and that it is not about minimalist background music, but very realistic with a sound that has a soul.

reception

Age rating

The MPAA gave the film an R rating in the US because of the language it contained and a brief nude scene , which advises parents not to allow their children to see the film. A scene that led to this age restriction, in which Mortensen can be seen in frontal nudity, was commented by the latter: “It's just a penis.” In addition, according to Mortensen, the nude scene is part of the story told in the film: “I show myself in it as a father naked to my children to demonstrate the completely natural, unrestrained coexistence of this family. "

In Germany, where the film is rated FSK 12, the release certificate says: “Individual dramatic scenes can frighten and stress children under the age of 12. But 12-year-olds and older are able to process them without being overwhelmed, as they are well embedded in the story and resolved conclusively. The calm mood of the film as well as its sensitive portrayal of family cohesion and care offer this age group enough emotional support, and the humor always ensures distance and relief. "

Reviews

The film was able to convince 83 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics (out of 225 critics in total, as of August 7, 2020). The consensus there says that the thought-provoking topics and the appearance of Viggo Mortensen will make the film an above-average family drama with unexpected twists. After its theatrical release, the film and the director and screenwriter quickly advanced to potential Oscar nominations , and Mortensen was nominated for Best Actor on January 24, 2017 .

Matt Ross directed and also wrote the screenplay for the film

Matthew Jacobs of The Huffington Post describes Captain Fantastic as a spirited film that celebrates life and ingenuity. The funny and at the same time fast-paced film is an ode to triumph over the burden of the world, which does not mean that one has to withdraw from it or embrace it. According to Jacobs, Matt Ross' greatest achievement is creating a script that doesn't feel like a hodgepodge of tree-hugging tropics . Jacobs recognizes a wisdom that is hidden behind Ben's philosophy, which sometimes becomes deliberately unpleasant, and a wisdom that shows itself in the fact that he recognizes the grievances of a systematized society, but ultimately makes a course correction for the benefit of his children when he becomes aware that he was not right about everything.

For USA Today's Bryan Alexander , the film is in no way an ideological or political story, just a story about people trying to find a way to live in harmony with themselves and as a group. Nevertheless, Alexander also recognizes the serious message conveyed by the tragicomic film by immersing himself in an increasingly divergent political society in the USA, but ultimately also Ben rethinking his rigid ideological point of view.

Leslie Felperin of The Hollywood Reporter says that some scenes in the film nicely show the thrilling victory of an alternative living class over the bourgeoisie from the suburbs, but ultimately the daydreams shown in the film are ridiculous and not very convincing. In addition, you idealize the children in the film and turn them into unbelievable sock puppets. In addition, the film glossed over a form of abuse that Felperin recognizes in the fact that Ben deliberately put his children in extreme situations that represented a threat to their physical health.

Pete Hammond of Deadline describes the film as a heartwarming, funny and at the same time sad, wonderfully played little gem that is exactly the kind of film that has been neglected by many. The film tries to answer the question of what makes a family, what it succeeds better than any film before it in the last ten years. Hammond compares the film with Little Miss Sunshine , sees Ross as an Oscar candidate for his work on the script, and shortly after the film's US theatrical release also brought Viggo Mortensen as a possible candidate for another Oscar nomination for Best Actor and Captain Fantastic himself as a candidate in the Best Film category . Scott Feinberg from The Hollywood Reporter also sees Mortensen as one of the most promising candidates in the Best Actor category and also considers Courtney Hoffman's costume design and hairstyling to be Oscar-worthy.

For Walli Müller from NDR , Ross rightly asks in the film how viable social utopias are. Despite all the situation comedy, the director doesn't just tap his topic for punch lines. Hartwig Tegeler from Deutschlandfunk believes it is important that Ross never ridicule the utopia that Ben lives with his children and that falls into a crisis during the course of the film. Patrick Wellinski from Deutschlandradio Kultur also gives the director great credit for not sacrificing the conflicts in the film to banal jokes and laconic moments of longing. According to Wellinski, the film is primarily characterized by its calm, self-confident narrative rhythm and its really convincing actors, and Mortensen in particular gives his character an inner turmoil, especially when the father has to realize that he does not impose his ideals on his own children can.

Gross profit

In Germany the film had 277,539 admissions. The film's worldwide revenues are currently $ 22.8 million.
