Shane Carruth (* 1972 in Myrtle Beach , South Carolina ) is an American director whose unorthodox science fiction debut Primer won the 2004 Sundance Film Festival Grand Prize and became a cult film, but it wasn't until 2013 that his second work, Upstream Color, came out in the cinemas.

Career

Carruth, originally from South Carolina , studied mathematics at Stephen F. Austin State University .

The 2004 film Primer about the consequences of the accidental discovery of a time machine , which was produced in 2004 for only $ 7,000 , won the Sundance Grand Prize and the Alfred Sloan Prize, as well as the Sci-Fi London and the Nantucket Film Festival's script / director prize. He was also nominated for a Gotham Award and four Independent Spirit Awards .

Upstream Color with Amy Seimetz , which was also heavily enigmatic but received positive reviews from critics - the FAZ describes it as "one of the best science fiction films ever made" - won the Dramatic Special Jury Award for at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Sound design.
