action

While visiting a club, the young Kris is kidnapped by a man, the "Thief". He gives her drugs and puts her in a hypnotized state. The drug cocktail is mixed with parasites that the man obtained from orchids. Under the influence of the man, she gets him money. The parasite begins to spread throughout your body. When the man releases her from her hypnotic state, the worms are so big that Kris can see their movements under her skin.

Soon after, another man, the "sampler", takes her to a farm by sending out signals that attract the parasite. With the help of a transfusion, the man extracts the parasite and transfers it to a pig. Kris wakes up in a car on the road with no memory of these mysterious happenings. Back at home she finds chaos, there is blood everywhere. She breaks off an attempt to call the police because she does not know what to tell the police officers. She has since lost her job through her unexplained absence and her account has been cleared.

A year later she meets Jeff, who apparently was subjected to the same procedures as her. The two begin a relationship and bond very strongly with each other on a subconscious level. This connection goes so far that they even feel their mutual pain, later they even share memories with each other without having said them. Kris feels pregnant but has been diagnosed with infertility.

In the meantime the infected pig was given piglets. The sampler puts them in a sack and throws them into a river. As a result, Kris and Jeff suffer from strange emotional states independently of each other and meet in Kris' apartment in a dissolute state. There they prepare for the worst, stock up on supplies, get a gun and camp in the bathtub. In the meantime, after a while, the parasites emerge from the sack with the dead piglets into the water and infect orchids growing there, which turn blue as a result. The orchids are collected and sold by farmers. The thief who kidnapped Kris at the beginning also gets the raw material for his narcotics.

Kris and Jeff are slowly discovering the secret of their strange condition. They find the sampler on his farm, Kris kills him with her gun. On the farm they find out that there are other victims. They bring them to the farm and convert them, and they also make animal husbandry more appropriate to the species. Because no more piglets can get into the river, the parasite's cycle is also interrupted.

background

Upstream Color is the second feature film by director and leading actor Shane Carruth after his debut Primer . After his low-budget debut won him the 2004 Sundance Film Festival Jury Prize , it took Carruth a few years to make another film. This period of time arose mainly from the fact that Carruth was pursuing another project called A Topiary for a long time , which unfortunately could not be realized.

As with Primer, he also took on one of the leading roles this time; he also wrote the screenplay, directed and also took over camera and editing, in addition to a few other functions. The film premiered on January 21, 2013 at the Sundance Film Festival, and there were several screenings at the 2013 Berlinale in Germany. The film is also distributed directly through Carruth, another role he plays in this film.

Awards

Upstream Color was on the 2013 Sundance Film Festival awarded a Special Jury Award for Best Sound Design.
