occupation

Driveways is a film drama by Andrew Ahn that premiered on February 10, 2019 at the Berlin International Film Festival and was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival from April 30, 2019 .

action

8-year-old Cody takes his mother, Kathy, on a road trip to the house of his recently deceased aunt. While she clears out the house in order to be able to sell it and has to fight her way through mountains of garbage that her sister hoarded for decades, Cody has to kill time in the strange little town. When he met the 83-year-old widower Del next door, it was the beginning of a special friendship for both of them. The old man, a veteran of the Korean War, has had a lifetime behind him. He takes care of Cody so that Kathy can work. It's a huge relief for her, and Cody enjoys hanging out with Del.

The young man thrives in his company, and for the ex-soldier, spending time with Cody is a welcome change. Also for Kathy, who is a little overwhelmed with the situation and notices that she didn't know her sister April very well, it helps that Del takes care of her son, especially since it is difficult for Cody to be with the children in the Neighborhood to get in touch. The boy reminds Del how much fun life is, especially since his friends at the Veterans Club are in various stages of physical and mental decline.

Reviews

The film has so far won over all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.9 out of a possible 10 points.

Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times writes that Andrew Ahn found a way to show an element of cultural difference through a skillful touch of casting Kathy and Cody with Asian-American actors without significantly changing the script can enrich history. This reminds us that cross-cultural friendships are created every day in the USA and do not only appear in films.

Stephen Farber of The Hollywood Reporter writes, without appearing as annoying social commentary, that the film alludes to a number of relevant contemporary issues, including the financial hardships many people in the US face and the loneliness and challenges of the Aging. The friendship between a reclusive man and a fatherless child reminded me a little of Hearts in Atlantis , in which Anthony Hopkins played a loner who was interested in a neighbor's little son, played by the late Anton Yelchin , but the details in Driveways and the quality of the acting made this film unique. In addition, the film corrects the fact that Brian Dennehy was only seen in small supporting roles in films of the past few years, because in his last monologue he shows a breathtaking piece of acting.

For Entertainment Weekly's Leah Greenblatt , it seems kind of a kismet that the final role of Brian Dennehy, who passed away in April 2020, feels like the fitting end to a long and rich film career. Rory O'Connor of The Film Stage writes that by playing the role, Ahn gave Dennehy the opportunity to fully explore the softer areas of his talents. The actor, in turn, has made Del something that is not that far removed from the hero in Pixars Above .
