Danger and Desire ( Chinese  色 , 戒 , Pinyin Sè, jiè ) is a feature film by the Taiwanese director Ang Lee with Tang Wei and Tony Leung in the leading roles. The film was made in 2007 as an adaptation of the short story of the same name by the Chinese writer Eileen Chang . It premiered that same year in the competition at the Venice International Film Festival , where Ang Lee received his second Golden Lion . The cinema release in Germany was on October 18, 2007.

The story is said to go back to a true event that is said to have happened in 1939 and 1940. It is set in Shanghai during the Second World War and the Second Sino-Japanese War and describes a group of Chinese students who, led by the student Kuang Yu Min, are founding a patriotic theater group. They find out that a certain Mr. Yee is an influential and dangerous collaborator with the Japanese army , and they want to murder him. To do this, they use the beautiful Wong Chia Chi as a fashionable decoy, who, as Mrs. Mak, should befriend Mrs. Yee in order to enter into a relationship with her husband. Because of the murder of a blackmailer by the theater company and the transfer of Mr. Yee to Shanghai, the protagonists part ways for the time being.

In 1941, during the Japanese occupation , Wong meets the leader of the theater company Kuang Yu Min again in Shanghai, where she is persuaded by him to join the Chinese resistance and, from her position, to act again against the well-guarded and extremely cautious Mr. Yee . Because of her financially strained situation and the not entirely extinct love for Kuang, she joins the resistance. However, she seems to fall for the cool intelligence chief.

At the jeweler she warns Yee of the planned assassination with a "Go now!" Yee escapes into his car and alerts the security service, who immediately cordon off the streets and finally arrest the theater group. Yee refrains from interrogating Wong herself. While the resisters kneel in a stone quarry in front of a cliff, ready for their execution, Yee signs the execution order with mixed feelings . When the precious ring, his gift to his lover Wong, is given to him, he claims not to know it. You can't hear or see shots. Yee returns to his family like every day.

“Newcomer” Tang Wei was an unusual choice for the lead role. She appeared, for example, in the Chinese qualifications for the Miss Universe competition in Beijing in 2004. Perhaps because of the extensive sexuality portrayed, her professional advancement in her home country was considerably restricted after this film (see Tang Wei ).

Box Office Mojo says the film has grossed about $ 66 million worldwide on an estimated $ 15 million budget.
