Tony Leung ( Chinese  梁朝偉  /  梁朝伟 , Pinyin Liáng Cháowěi , Jyutping Loeng 4 Ciu 4 wai 5 , Cantonese Leung Chiu Wai; born June 27, 1962 in Hong Kong ) is a Chinese actor. He is considered one of the most renowned players in all of Asia.

To distinguish him from his fellow actor Tony Leung Ka-Fai , Leung is called "Little Tony" in Hong Kong film circles, while his colleague Ka-Fai is known as "Big Tony", which also reflects the physical stature of the two.

Tony Leung Chiu-Wai began his career as a comedy television actor for TVB. After a few minor roles, he won two Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role - for People's Hero (1987) and for My Heart is That Eternal Rose (1989). In the early 1990s, Leung stood out in succinct and demanding roles in the John Woo thrillers Bullet in the Head (1990) and Hard Boiled (1992).

Above all, Leung gained wide international attention through his five joint works with Wong Kar-Wai , Hong Kong's renowned auteur filmmaker . His subtle, humorous portrayal of a deeply in love policeman in Wong's cult film Chungking Express (1994) earned him an award for Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards , as did his portrait of a homosexual who was in exile in Argentina two years later in Happy Together Trying to process painful separation.

Also at the Hong Kong Film Awards, he was recognized for Wong's lavishly visualized chamber play romance In the Mood for Love , in which he has a platonic love affair with his neighbor ( Maggie Cheung ) as a newspaper editor . The two finally have to learn that their respective spouses (who can only be seen from behind in the film or heard off-screen) have a relationship with each other. In 2046 (2004) he continued this role. At the Cannes International Film Festival he received the Actor Award in 2000.

In recent years he has worked with the most important directors in Chinese and Hong Kong cinema , including starring in Zhang Yimou's opulent martial arts epic Hero (2002; again with Maggie Cheung) as well as in Ang Lee's historical drama Danger and Desire (2007). He also starred in Hou Hsiao-Hsien's exotic, minimalist Hai shang hua (1998) and in the thriller Infernal Affairs .

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
