Happy Together is a 1997 Chinese drama series directed by Wong Kar-wai .
action
The focus of the film is the turbulent relationship between Ho Po-Wing and Lai Yiu-fai. The couple are from Hong Kong and immigrate to Argentina , where most of the action takes place. The male couple is hoping to renew their relationship with their emigration to Argentina. The two men are very different in their character traits, so that there is further tension in Argentina. While Lai wants to lead his life quietly and responsibly in Argentina, Ho is impulsive and extravagant and fails to make the relationship monogamous. At the end of the film, the relationship fails and Lai returns to Hong Kong, while Ho stays in Argentina.
criticism
The film received international recognition, particularly in the United States. Edward Guthmann of the San Francisco Chronicle praised the film for its innovative camera work and the directorial approach. Stephen Holden of the New York Times said it was a very warm film compared to Wong's previous work. In contrast, Jonathan Rosenbaum of the Chicago Reader criticized the rather vague storyline.
Wong himself said that in this film, some target groups could say that the title seems very cynical because the story is about two people who actually live together, but then separate again in the end.
Awards
The film director Wong Kar-wai was nominated for the Palme d' Or.
