Asian Film Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Asian Film Awards , or AFA for short ( Chinese  亞洲 電影 大獎  /  亚洲 电影 大奖 ) are awards for outstanding achievements by Asian filmmakers. Until 2019, the prizes were awarded in Hong Kong or Macau as part of the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF). From 2020 the event will also take place in other locations in Asia, starting with Busan and the Busan International Film Festival in October 2020. Today, the celebrations are among the most influential film awards in Asia .

The first event took place on March 20, 2007 on the opening night of the 31st Hong Kong International Film Festival. A jury of 21 with representatives from all Asian countries awards prizes in ten categories.

In the first two years the event was dominated by filmmakers and films from South Korea, whereas in 2009 Japan won the most important awards. The Japanese horror film director Kiyoshi Kurosawa won the awards for best film as well as for best screenplay with Tokyo Sonata .
